Poll question: If the Republicans have power for the next 12 years, the US will
What will happen to the United States if the Republicans have power for the next 12 years?

The United States would...

1. Be the former Soviet Union.
Broke, destitute, extreme unemployment, and zero credit worldwide, and thousands of nuclear bombs just laying around.

2. Yeah, that's true, but also a theocracy, I think.
I think the eventual goal of the religious right is to outlaw all other religions besides Christianity.

4. I'm thinking more along the lines of an actual split.
A lot like what has transpired in Europe and the old Soviet Union the past hundred years. States like California, and New York, which have huge economies, and grow their own food will become their own separate entities, while large chunks of the red states will probably huddle together and become theocracies.

6. Except - the GOP has set out to destroy California's
uniqueness and economic vitality --- whether it is killing rapid transit in Silicon Valley or trampling on our State's Rights (watch - the Feds have attacked our Medical Marijuana Law -- and I expect an attack on our stem cell research law).

7. I honestly wouldn't mind that, at this point.
I would love for the blue states to be their own country. The cool people in the red states can move to us!

3. Read Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale"
Read Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" for what I think is a realistic prediction of the US after 20 years of Rapture Right Republican control.

5. I would mix in Tom Frank's "What's The Matter With Kansas?"
Frank's "What's the Matter with Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America" has got to be the most depressing analysis of how we will get to a theocratic, plutocratic, fascist dictatorship - as described in Atwood's "Handmaiden's Tale."

And the sheeple will vote for it - to protect us from Gay Marriage, Abortion, Stem Cell Research, Evolution, and Euthanasia, and to bring forth Methane Hydrate and Abiotic Snake Oil.

Scary, isn't it.

9. Thanks for the suggestion. I've seen that book before, but
I haven't read it, yet. I should, one of these days.

10. The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer
and we will be on the brink of class warfare like we have never known before. The RWers will be denying and finger-pointing as usual saying the problems are all the libs fault right up to the very end. And there will be an end.

11. ...become a theocratic fascist plutocracy...
...and me and my wife would no longer be living in it.

We'd go to Canada, at the least, where we can marry and actually have it count for something. Possibly further if that's not good enough.
