It would probably lessen their insurance rates too, since if you can get up those stairs backwards, you're less likely to have a heart attack and die on your first day in the gym.

In a building that I used to work in, which had a rarely used escalator.

I would use the down escalator as my own private stair master. Not very fast, but certainly a good workout if you stay on for a half-hour.
