Autopsy report in:
Bacterial infection sank Bubba, the 22-pound lobster.

Bubba, the giant crustacean whose national celebrity helped him avoid becoming someone's expensive dinner, died from a severe bacterial infection, according to a necropsy report released yesterday.

The 22-pound lobster had traveled from the Atlantic Ocean to Wholey's in the Strip District to the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. In the process, he became the subject of sympathy and debate.

He died at the zoo on March 2, less than 24 hours after his transfer from the fish market, where he had lived in a tank for about five days.

"The cause of death in this lobster is attributed to a severe bacterial infection affecting primarily the digestive gland," according to the necropsy, which is the animal version of an autopsy.

3. Au contraire, Richardo:

Though Bubba was intended for human consumption, the infection would have posed no threat to consumers if properly cooked, according to The National Fisheries Institute.
