In relation to someone you loved who has passed - what songs choke you up?
After mom died on New Years eve I find myself in tears listening to things which never bothered me before (music wise).

I suck at song titles usually, so forgive me if I get some of these wrong.

Meet me at the crossroads (bone thugs and harmony)
Go rest high on that mountain
Damn theme song from titanic
Will you remember me
and a ton of country music - too many to mention.

Hell, about 1/3 of songs seem to strike a chord with me now. Any DU'ers relate to this?

14. My grandfather passed away in January,
one month before his 80th birthday. As a member of the Rangers, he is entitled to a honor guard(he was cremated and we will inter his ashes in June next to his wife a few states away). I know that I will lose it during Taps. I have also been told that there was be a lone bagpipe there(per request of our family-Scottish) so I will probably lose it during Amazing Grace too.

4. Johnny Cash -- "The Man comes around"
It is song right before "Hurt" on his last CD..., it does it to me everytime.

Lyrics:

And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder: One of the four beasts saying: "Come and see." And I saw. And behold, a white horse.

There's a man goin' 'round takin' names. An' he decides who to free and who to blame. Everybody won't be treated all the same. There'll be a golden ladder reaching down. When the man comes around.

The hairs on your arm will stand up. At the terror in each sip and in each sup. For you partake of that last offered cup, Or disappear into the potter's ground. When the man comes around.

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin'. Multitudes are marching to the big kettle drum. Voices callin', voices cryin'. Some are born an' some are dyin'. It's Alpha's and Omega's Kingdom come.

And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree. The virgins are all trimming their wicks. The whirlwind is in the thorn tree. It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Till Armageddon, no Shalam, no Shalom. Then the father hen will call his chickens home. The wise men will bow down before the throne. And at his feet they'll cast their golden crown. When the man comes around.

Whoever is unjust, let him be unjust still. Whoever is righteous, let him be righteous still. Whoever is filthy, let him be filthy still. Listen to the words long written down, When the man comes around.

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin'. Multitudes are marchin' to the big kettle drum.

In measured hundredweight and penny pound. When the man comes around.

And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

6. Iris - Goo Goo Dolls & Angel - Sara McLaughlin
... both remind me of a friend/flame who died 12 years ago ...

'I just Called to Say I Love You' (uh huh .. :wtf: ) reminds me of my mom, because it was popular when she was sick & passed in 1986 - and for some wierd reason, she liked it ...

And oddly, Marilyn Manson's "mObscene" reminds me of Kef - because he was a Manson fan, and I remember jammin' it with him in my car one night on the way home from a Dean gig.

Edit to add the song part! So any song relating to mom's day still makes me cringe a bit, though I'm not as emotional.

9. "Your Wildest Dreams"
by the Moody Blues.

Once upon a time
Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Reflected in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you
Think about me
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams

Once the world was new
Our bodies felt the morning dew
That greets the brand new day
We couldn't tear ourselves away
I wonder if you care
I wonder if you still remember
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams

10. "Candle in the Window" by Alabama
My Mom died 16 years ago. When I joined the Navy more than 30 years ago, she put an electric Christmas candle in my bedroom window to light my way home. My Dad kept it in the house until he died last year. I have it in my house now. I can't listen to that song without tearing up.

11. To Where You Are -Josh Groban
I think it was in the top 10 of songs played at funerals after the song first came out.

I also like "Remember" by Groban too. It's from the soundtrack of "Troy". It always gives me goosebumps and I hope someone plays it at my funeral.

Remember
I will still be here
As long as you hold me
In your memory

Remember
When your dreams have ended
Time can be transcended
Just remember me

I am the one star that keeps burning
So brightly
It is the last light
To fade into the rising sun

I'm with you whenever you tell
My story
For I am all I've done

Remember
I will still be here
As long as you hold me
In your memory
Remember me

I am that warm voice in the cold wind
That whispers
And if you listen
You'll hear me call across the sky

As long as I still can reach out
And touch you
That I will never die

Remember
I'll never leave you
If you will only
Remember me

Remember
I will still be here
As long as you hold me
In your memory

Remember
When your dreams have ended
Time can be transcended
I live forever
Remember me
Remember me
Remember me

12. One of my cousins had a son who died when he was only
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 08:18 PM by Longgrain
around ten years old. He used to love the music of the rock group Styx. It's hard for me, because I was the one who first introduced him to their music...

"Don't let it End" was played at his funeral...I think I'm going to cry now...thanks for bringing it up...

What can I do
Pictures of you still make me cry
Trying to live without your love
It's so hard to do
Some nights I'll wake up
I'll look at your pillow
Hoping that I'll see you there
But I get up each day, not much to say
I've nowhere to go
Loneliness fills me up inside
'Cause I'm missing you
So if you'll give us a chance to remember
The love we had once together
Wait and see
Time is all that we really need
I'm praying you won't say no
I mean to tell you

CHORUS
Don't let it end
Baby we could have so much more
Don't let it end
Honey please don't walk out that door

I'm telling you baby, I made my mistakes
But I'll make you this promise to do what it takes
I'll be there to protect you and hold you tight
You got my lovin' baby every single night

Don't let it end
I'm begging you, don't let it end this way
Don't let it end
I'm begging you, don't let it end this way

Don't let it end
Baby we could have so much more
Don't let it end
Honey please don't walk out that door
Don't let it end
I'm begging you don't let it end this way
Don't let it end
I'm begging you don't let it end this way, no, no, no
No, no, no

What will I do
If you say we're through
I need you to stay, honey
Don't let it end this way.

15.  I Will Remember You by Sarah McLachlan
I can't listen to that song anymore, it makes me to weepy. It reminds me of my Mom and my friends mom that have both died.

I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Dont let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

Remember the good times that we had?
I let them slip away from us when things got bad
How clearly I first saw you smilin? in the sun
Wanna feel your warmth upon me, I wanna be the one

I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Dont let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

I'm so tired but I cant sleep
Standin on the edge of something much too deep
It's funny how we feel so much but we cannot say a word
We are screaming inside, but we cant be heard

But I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Dont let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

I'm so afraid to love you, but more afraid to loose
Clinging to a past that doesnt let me choose
Once there was a darkness, deep and endless night
You gave me everything you had, oh you gave me light

And I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Dont let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

And I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Dont let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories
Weep not for the memories

Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 08:34 PM by darkstar
who died nearly 3 years ago.

"We'll Sing In The Sunshine" One of my Mom's favorites. So wistful to begin with, and now that association.

And oddly enough "Tomorrow" by Patti Smith (yes the one from Annie; it's a hidden track at the end of disk two of the greatest hits/live retrospective "Land.") As well as being one of my Mom's faves as well--and Patti saying "I'm going to do a little song for my mother" at the outset--almost evyone I know is blown away by her version. A little rough around the edges, perhaps, but incredibly powerful.

My son used to play some of his songs on his guitar. We played it quietly in the background at his funeral. Whenever I hear any guitar music I cry (as I am now) because I know he'd have come tearing in the room to watch and listen and his fingers would be picking.

25. Wish You Were Here
Makes me think of my best friend who was also my oldest child's father. He died in a car crash at the age of 22, never knew he was a father. Our birthdays were 9 days apart and we used to celebrate them together. Both loved Pink Floyd. When I still lived in Vermont, I would visit his grave on his birthday and play Wish You Were Here for him.

Tears In Heaven came out the year another friend's six year old son drowned. Always makes me think of him.

If I had a song for every dead friend I have, it would take a month to play them all.

Even Now

-Artist: Barry Manilow as sung on "Greatest Hits" -Arista A2L 8601
-peak Billboard position # 19 in 1978
-Words and Music by Marty Panzer and Barry Manilow

Even now when there's someone else who cares
When there's someone home who's waiting just for me
Even now I think about you as I'm climbin' up the stairs
And I wonder what to do so she won't see that

Even now when I know it wasn't right
And I've found a better life than what we had
Even now I wake up cryin' in the middle of the night
And I can't believe it still could hurt so bad

Even now when I have come so far
I wonder where you are, I wonder why it's still so hard without you
Even now when I come shining through, I swear I think of you
And how I wish you knew, even now

<brief instrumental interlude>

Even now when I never hear your name
And the world has changed so much since you've been gone
Even now I still remember and the feeling's still the same
And this pain inside of me goes on and on, even now

Even now when I have come so far
I wonder where you are
I wonder why it's still so hard without you
Even now when I come shinin' through
I swear I think of you and God, I wish you knew
Somehow, even now
