Help me choose the music for my show tomorrow.
We're in the middle of our fundraiser, so it's gotta be accessible and up tempo.

If you were programming a jazz show tomorrow, what would YOU play?

(oh - and we're talking jazz here)

68. Woah...
I didn't know you were on an EMU station. :)
I was signed up to attend EMU for an art degree. Lithography, to be exact. I really liked it there. And I even took a tour of the super cool automated library.
A move to Chicago ended that possibility, but I always liked that school.

57. Another local Latin jazz band. This one called Suenalo Sound System
Miami's own premier jam collective. Suenalo Sound System synthesizes powerful lyrics, slamming bass lines, dueling guitars, psychedelic electro-funk and at the core, a supercharged kinetically driven percussion section. Merged together in late 2002 by a love to play music, Suenalo Sound System's unique flavor brings hope to the underground of a city which at times may appear to lack an innovative sound.

The foundation of the band consists of two guitar players, a keyboardist, bassist, drummer, two percussionists one sax player and two lead vocalists....however, S.S.S is constantly amplified with various special guests, including some of the most talented local artists and Grammy winners and nominees.

As diverse as Miami itself, these musician's hometown's span the U.S., South America, and the Caribbean. Therefore, it is no accident that their unique brand of groove fuses together reggae, rhythm & blues, cumbia, funk, samba, rock and roll and salsa. These soulful artists delicately weave in and out of their roots to bring us a new special brand of improvisational Latin Jam.

61. Up-tempo, huh? Marian McPartland, Error Garner, Monty Alexander ...
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 01:30 AM by TahitiNut
... Oscar Peterson ("Bag's Groove" is on of my favs and, of course, "Night Train" aka "Happy Go Lucky Local").
There's the Stan Getz/João Gilberto/Antonio Carlos Jobim version of "Desafinado" that I love.
There's the Monty Alexander/Ray Brown/Russell Malone version of "Fly Me To The Moon" that's super.
I'm a bit of a Monty Alexander freak, so I like all of his stuff. He does wonderful up-tempo (with his unique Carib flavor) renditions of standards like "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" (which I love), "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "Straighten up and Fly Right." (I've owned and loved his 'Full Steam Ahead' and 'Trio' albums for ages.)

Stick the original recording of "Unsquare Dance" in there (with the Gerry Mulligan? laugh at the end) by Brubeck just for a change of pace from the up-tempo stuff.

Do some Ella and Louis. "They Can't Take That Away from Me" is a good choice - but you really can't miss with them.

Add some Bill Evans ... "What Is This Thing Called Love?" perhaps.

Then, end the show with "Bellavia" by Chuck Mangione.
(If there're some sunny/stormy clouds in the Michigan sky, it'd be awesome.)

67. Hey... I bought my speakers (AR-9's) for up-tempo jazz 35 years ago.
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 02:06 AM by TahitiNut
I've been a jazz junkie for 40 years, mostly up-tempo, traditional jazz. (I'm just not into Spider Martin at all.)

Those AR-9's are tight, clean, and without the boominess that most drain-bead acid heads seem to like. They're monsters, though ... about five feet high and 16"x18", I get a hernia every time I move. Monuments to my insanity. (I like baroque, too. Vivaldi esp.)

The first date I had with my ex-wife back in '70-71 was Dave Brubeck's 'Reunion' tour concert at Meadowbrook. Damned near came down with pneumonia but was enthralled every second. I was ringside at Blues Alley (in D.C.) for Monty Alexander, and lived in Rochester, NY, for about 9 years ... home of the Mangione family (who the Diz' visited frequently) and the Eastman School (where Gap taught).

72. I kind of like Don Byron...
I bought the Ivey-Divey cd on a whim, and I really enjoy it. I'm not very well versed in jazz, but I find this album really enjoyable... especially the song "I've Found A New Baby."

75. Oh wow :)
I'm not surprised that you know this one, but most people get that quizzical "huh?" face when I mention this CD. Then I tell them to put their confusion aside and just go buy the CD. They ALWAYS thank me later. :)

78. Vince Jones: "Hindered on His Way to Heaven"
http://www.vincejones.com.au/albums/futuregirl.html

There's also a great old one by Matt Bianco (featuring Basia) called "Half a Minute" - more of a fusion between jazz and latin rhythms but OMG, infectious. :hi:

83. "Accessible"? Guess that means Eric Dolphy is out, huh?
Okay...how about George Shearing's solo piano version of Greensleeves from "My Ship"? Or Father Tom Vaughan's version of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", if you've got it...

87. Dolphy's "Green Dolphin" is one of the best.
And I'll renew some of my requests.

Mount Harrissa -- Ellington
In a Sentimental Mood -- Ellington/Coltrane (Have you the Johnny Frigo version?)
Don't Fence Me In -- Rollins
Something by Dorothy Donegan
