Imagine you work for a pizza place that guarantees delivery within thirty minutes, or the pizza free. You have a track record of getting to your deliveries within the time limit. So, what would be the greater motivation in getting the pizzas delivered as fast as possible? You have to pick one.

Could a simple delivery boy have 10% of his income taken away for getting stuck behind a train? Would that be legal?

And in general my motivation would be to deliver as fast as possible to make the most tips. The boss and customer are second thoughts when my nightly beer money is on the line.

Honestly, I'm not sure, it was just a thought I had. The main thrust of the question was to determine whether one was more motivated by profit than serving customers. Your argument actually proves the point that you can do both, because if you give your customers good service, then the likelihood of better tips increases.
