Poll question: Worst chain restaurant NAME
Edited on Mon Mar-28-05 12:26 AM by undisclosedlocation
Leaving aside questions of quality of food, service, and contributions to the homogenization of America by our corporate masters, which has the most obnoxious name?

...when we visited Santa Barbara in the early 60s.

It was completely different from the chain that took its name. One of the best breakfast places I've ever been to. Despite the connotations of the name, I'm glad they're still around.

34. They didn't...
The Hungry Tiger was a completely different chain -- started by the owners of the Flying Tigers cargo airline.

When I was in L.A. in the late '70s, there was a Sambos a couple of blocks north, and a Hungry Tiger about five miles south.

There was at least one of these in Charlottesville, Virginia. That was a good 35 years ago, and they have since gone on to something else or folded; I don't know.

41. What is it with L.A. burger joints...
In-N-Out!
In-N-Out!
That's what a hamburger's allllllllll about!

They used to sell bumperstickers -- it should come as no surprise to learn that teenagers everywhere would "edit" those stickers to simply read:

IN-N-OUT
URGE

But what is it about hamburger chains in L.A. that seem to pick absurd names? The biggest competitor to In-N-Out was Fatburger, which has now gone nationwide. Now, I understand that this was named on the basis of "Fat" being a positive slang term of the time (not unlike "phat" today?), but when I think of "fatburger," all I can think of is a) "heart attack city," and b) YECH!

Sometimes it's a good idea to read your slogan aloud before spending money on it. Theirs? "Where Everyone's A Regular" (or, where everyone's irregular)

53. Get this annecdotal thingy...LauderDoggies:
When I was a teenager, a new American "family restaurant" chain opened up where I grew up. I remember lining up for about four hours after school in minus ten degree weather to interview for a shitty minimum wage job at a shithole called (and I'm not kidding) "LauderDoggies".

The mascot looked exactly like Poochie from the Simpsons (I wonder if that's where Poochie came from), and the decor was exactly like Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag, but with more surfboards.

This place was trying to latch onto the "Fort Lauderdale Spring Break zeitgeist" of the 80s. The uniform for men was a white oxford shirt with black dress jam shorts, and one of a series of novelty ties. For women it was worse; a coconut-textured tank top and a synthetic grass skirt.

The worst part was that instead of using servers using their real names, they wanted them to use the names of American pop icons. "Hi, I'm Buddy Fucking Holly, and I'll be your waiter tonight", and "Spiro Agnew and Dorothy Kilgallen, pickup!".

Keep in mind this "Ground Zero of Florida Fun" was in fucking Ontar-i-fucking-o, and, had it succeeded, it would have also become "Ground Zero for pale Canadian teens' arms and legs on display".

The owner of the chain was the guy who interviewed us all, and he was a complete obnoxious prick. By the time it was my turn to be screened, I SO didn't want to work in that crapotoreum. I remember telling the owner one of my hobbies was "stealing flatware". I'm so fucking grateful I wasn't "good enough" to make the LauderDoggie's team. In fact, the place never opened... was it ever successful in the US?

Seriously, why? Was it a toss up between that and Under My Thumb? Sympathy For the Devil? Brown Sugar?

55. Donut Castle Pit Stop
Don't know if six locations qualifies as a chain. Gas and donuts, the worst of each.

No?

OK then, Hooters.
The rest are stupid, that one's pig bait.

56. Souper Salad and Good Eats
I hate those names, and I will never eat at either.

I know it's supposed to be cute, Souper instead of Super, but it's annoying and I just think it's stupid.

And Good Eats, if it's so good, why do you need to put it in your name. To me it says "not really that good, but the same says it is."

87. For the record,
Good Eats is half-owned by Gene Street, a Democrat, and is a good blue company.

I used to eat at Black Eyed Pea, then I found out how red Brinker restaurants are. Good Eats is a good substitute.

113. souper salad
I always thought it was a play on 'Soup or Salad?' I've never been to one, but I figured they offered soup or salad, plus thats what they ask when you order in restaurants. I always thought it was a decent name, but if it is supposed to be super salad, ahaha yeah that is really cheesy.

59. Chock Full O Nuts
My first trip to NYC, I'd never heard of this name. When I saw one of the restaurants I stood there on the street laughing because it looked like "Chock Full O Nuts" referred to the people inside. But since I was in NYC everyone ignored me. So I kept laughing.

Their menu's gotten better, though.

You can even order a side of chili peppers, which is what the restaurant is really named after.

109. Nah, it's simple but it's complicated
http://www.ruthschris-austin.com/general_history.htm
The restaurant Ruth Fertel bought in 1965 was named "Chris Steak House," and she acquired the right to use that name as long as the restaurant remained in the original location. But after a fire forced her to move, she needed a new name. Adding her name to the logo seemed the simplest solution and "Ruth's Chris Steak House" was born.
