Poll question: Mainstream rock battle: Paul McCartney &Wings vs. Steve Miller
My wife, Charron the bass player, is favoring Sir Paul, I insist that as far as that goes it's Steve Miller way better musically than anything that ex-Beatle did solo.

Help decide this musical disagreement with your vote.

1. Miller by far
Wings was pap.

Steve Miller had some outstanding tunes and a decent keyboard player. "Wild Mountain Honey" is a case in point.

3. I'll take the worst Wings over the 'best' Miller
Even dreck like 'Back To The Egg'.

Miller has a gratingly annoying voice - painfully white. Since the Wings DID have some great material - or at least most of the 'Band On The Run' album, some of 'Ram', and the odd hit here and there from others... I will go with a cloying and lazy Paul over an overweening, unbearably hackneyed Miller.

Saw Paul live in 1990, and it was a great show. Far better than that Super Bowl appearance would have you believe.

4. chacun a son gout...
I hated "Band on the Run"... it's an incredibly smarmy and annoying song.

I'll throw in a Molotov cocktail here... solo John beats the pants off any other solo Beatle OR Steve Miller :)

5. I prefer John too
Although George's "All Things Must Pass" is the best ex-Beatle album ever. *lobs Molotov cocktail back*. ;-)

I'll even take Ringo's worst solo crud over Miller. For 'Abracadabra' alone, fire ants should be unleashed in Miller's pants.

6. how about Manfred Mann's Earth Band?
Mann is an outstand Moog player, it's too bad he's only remembered for a cloying novelty remake of a Springsteen tune.

9. I prefer Ten Years After or Savoy Brown from that era
but it's still Jimi today, isn't it?

"I want to reach out and grab ya!" that's rock and roll compared to "Helen Wheels" or "Londontown" or "Venus and Mars are all right tonite...":puke:

8. My musician hubby says "Steve Miller with out a doubt."
Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 01:21 PM by CottonBear
I love McCartney, but Wings is cloying and too sweet.

Steve Miller rocks.

EDIT: My hubby thinks John's solo albums trump everyone else mentioned on this thread.

10. You don't even know about wild mountain honey.
Ooh, mama
Well look what's been done
You can only see the stars
After a setting sun

You run for the money
You don't even know about wild mountain honey

Come on mama
Heal this lonesome man
Grow the tree of wholeness
In this desert land

Come on children
Now learn how to run
By heaven, the stars, the moon and the sun

Come on papa
Your end is the means
Don't trade your love and goodness
For the golden machine

You run for the money
You don't even know about wild mountain honey

11. Steve Miller wins....wtf kind of song is "Band on the Run"?
It's like, fifth grade band performance.

I found Wings to be mostly unnuanced, straightforward "Hey lookie, I'm Paul McCartney and I'm still playing and my wife's here! I'm way happier than you!"

Steve Miller isn't Bach, but his sound was way earthier and hip.

13. Though I would pay to have both groups albums destroyed
entirely I had to vote for Wings McCartney is a dislike and that is because he was a member of the Beatles. As for the Steve Miller Band its an all encompassing hate brought on by the fact that when I was in HS their greatest hits albums was a favorite party album which was usually played over and over again.

14. That's horrific.
Sometimes I just have to grateful for the small things, like J Giles Full House being the big party album of my youth.

17. I still bear the scars today
My hand usually breaks the sound barrier reaching for the dial or button to change the station when I hear them come on the radio.

19. I liked Wings (shields face and cowers)
Yeah, a lot of it was uninspired junk, but the Wingspan album serves as all the solo McCartney you need, whittling it down to only the best. I wouldn't consider buying the individual albums though.

The songs may not be genius, but the can be almost irriatingly catchy. And as much as I love all four Beatles, you have to admit that John was just as if not more lazy than Paul.

20. Wings
Yeah, Wings is "pop" (not that there's anything wrong with that) but they just did more stuff that I like. Most of Steve Miller's band stuff is listenable; I like it OK, but don't feel that strongly about it. And I don't think they ever did an album as thoroughly good as Band on the Run.
