28. You may have a point there.
Edited on Sat Mar-26-05 11:12 PM by Seabiscuit
The Green Party never seems to have been forgiven for fielding Nader in 2000 and stealing 4% of the vote while Gore lost to Bush. That extra 4% would have made the Florida fiasco unnecesary, and Gore would have won.

And the country and the world have been paying for it with blood and money ever since.

Nader turns my stomach for not only that reason, but because he bashes republicans and democrats, conservatives and liberals alike, trying to carve a niche out for himself, while attempting to justify himself with the most inane long-winded gibberish known to man.

77. Yah, I'd buy that.
Since the election, I've really been focused on the idea that the Democrats need to rally their base. Undecideds will decide to support us if we can start nailing the "Bush Lies/Voting Neo-Con is Suicide" frame. To me, it's no longer worth it to try to "reach out" to the wavering conservatives or those still inexplicably on the fence about voting Democrat--including the Nader/Green supporters. Basically, I no longer feel it's productive to criticize or demonize them. But, if I were to see them on these boards, while I wouldn't consider violating site guidelines or forgetting to act like a decent human being...I'm not sure I'd want to interact with them either.

6. I put Texans
As a Texan I always am bothered just a bit to be lumped in with those "other" Texans.

I've discovered many liberal Texans the past few years.

The sad thing is to see a W04 sticker on a beat up old car driven by a person who I highly suspect has no health care.

Ostracized or not though, I still love it here on DU.

that I bash your Bush led state government and the idiots among you, not all Floridians. All states have idiots amongst us, but Florida's idiots have been highlighted and displayed on the tube quite a bit more often. It does lead some of us to believe that maybe some states including my own have a larger ratio of right wing idiot. Maybe you'd have a case in the media that maybe they portray Florida in a bad light more often than any other state.

as a matter of fact, you are probably the first lawyer I've ever "met". Well, even though it's only online. I find it fascinating actually. I've always wanted to have a lawyer as a friend if for no other reason than to pick your brain to try and undestand.

Would you stop with the persecution motif. You are most welcome on DU, in fact people bend over to make that clear. It's Easter tomorrow, the day of rebirth and celebration, lighten up already, celebrate, look to 'our father in the sky.'

The most ostracized group on DU are closet Freepers on the 2004 Elections Forum, people who try to convince the astute readers there that there really is a reasonable explanation as to why every statistical law known to man can be broken and still there are those who say * was really elected. Folks to step out of line there are in for a world of shit.

50. The moralizers & proselytizers. The ones who insist on martyr status.
They're nailed frequently -- if I may use that verb on Easter Sunday -- and rightly so. They appear to believe that everyone else must share their belief system, and barring that, they become instant "victims." If other DUers don't kow-tow to their limitations, then other DUers are mean-spirited.

Codswallop.

necessarily

If an ostracized group is big enough, they aren't exactly wandering the perimeter of the DU social scene - they're just another group that may take alot of heat.

I feel sorry for the Joe Leiberman fans (but not really that sorry).

I really feel sorry for the Vegetarian New Mexican Jew in Oregon who's going to Episcopal Church tomorrow for Easter - then ham for dinner afterwards. That guy is pathetic. ;)

53. Other
I feel there are a few groups more ostracized than the ones mentioned. Some of the groups that really get beat up:

Southerners (we are all inbreed, cousin-humping, Rebel Flag waving, racist hicks),

NON-Christians (did you see the "shit-storm" when I suggested a Jewish group? Also, just about ANY disagreement with a Christian poster or ideal leads to "you are a Christian basher."),

and

supporters of Israel (not the policies, per se, but the nation. People won't even post if it is mentioned, and just about any thread that starts out about Israel ends up in the I/P room, even if it has nothing to do with that conflict.).

I would also think there are some cliques here, but no biggie.

56. Atheists and other nonChristians
You can't open your mouth about fundamentalist Christians anywhere, including DU, without getting a slew of pm's and replies that are downright defensive and offensive at the same time. EVEN IF you differentiate between liberal Christians and fundamentalists like Bush and his followers, an awful lot of Christians on here will jump you and not even stop to think about how reactionary they are being about the subject. What's so sad about it is that there are a few Christians who will actually be kind and considerate about it Those that go on the offensive because they couldn't seem to understand that the original poster was referring to fundies spoil it for the rest who try to discuss. Of course, this will provoke a reaction eventually from atheists who are tired of being not only in the minority but being ganged up on if we/they dare speak our/their minds.

101. Only a few weeks ago
there was a string of Jesus threads that were obviously offensive to at least some Christians on the board. I can't think of a time when there were a few dozen threads insulting atheists in one evening. I see comments insulting to christians posted frequently.
You have a point in broader society but I don't believe that translates to DU.

108. Actually, atheists do get bashed more than Christians
and that is something there is no place you can go without it happening. And if Christians were ever ganged up on like atheists are, for simply pointing out the truth, you'd all be running to get lawyers to fight it out in court for violating your civil rights. Must be nice. You have YOUR rights. The rest of us don't. I wish the shoe would move to the other foot long enough for you to understand what it's like. Then maybe you'd get my point. If you are in the majority then you'll NEVER understand.

119. You've got to be joking
At first I thought this was a joke, then I realized you must live in another reality. Atheists diss Christianity on here to no end. Christians don't bring up religion on their own. I've never seen threads that contradict that.

Don't believe me? Find a news item that has ANYTHING to do with Christianity and I'll find a news item that deals with atheism. I guarantee that the Christianity thread will have five snarky comments within five minutes from atheists and Christians won't care about the atheist thread.

I really suggest you start paying attention.

91. Well there's a lot of broadbrushing here at DU- and its not just
against Christians. There is a dominant culture here and I think there are people who just don't realize there is a limit to what people should have to put up with. Italians get sick and tired of being associated with organized crime. Catholics get sick and tired of being associated with pedophile priests. Naderites get tired of being blamed for election 2000. And liberal Christians get sick and tired of being ridiculed for being Christians. I think sometimes people at DU need to listen to others more and do their homework- that way they would find that religion in general and Christianity in particular is not so simple as they would make it out to be.

I saw a poll earlier and non believers in god out number believers, add to the fact we do have some Jews, Muslims, etc who also believe in god. I can tolerate criticism as long as people don't call organized religion something that they brainwashed do.

120. How the fuck are we supposed to get a scientific poll?
Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 10:45 PM by JohnKleeb
and I think its reasonable of me to say that at least one in every three DUers are athiest or agnostic. I dont feel persecuted against but I feel people do say some really fucked up things about something they have no understanding of what it means to others. I dont think there is a clear majority but Ive been here and seen enough polls to know its more closer to being even than it is to being majority Christian. I say give and take maybe you got 35-45% of people who are athiest/agnostic and another of the same about who are christian. Theres also a sizable Wiccan community here on the boards and of course you have Jewish posters as well, and I know of a couple muslims too.
