I took a jazz history class in college. Sheila Jordan was the only vocalist the professor played for us. Mid sixties, it was the dawn of the avant garde, and Sheila was the only singer that was that far out.

My chidhood ambition was to be a professional jazz drummer and tap dancer, in the tradition of Jo Jones and Budy Rich. As an adolescent I wanted to be a writer for Down Beat Magazine. One of my classmates' brother did that, and he had over 50,000 albums that he got for free!

Eventually did some writing and radio. You know how it goes. I was in New York so I got to see everybody, and meet most of them. Yep, I got a lot of stories. You play things that stir up memories, PM.

I was a big Michael Zwerin fan. Feather was the dean of course. I never got published in DB. Lesser publications, but I did get payed. One of my best titles was staff photographer for Cash Box Magazine. I got the title because a friend of mine was the editor. (They really had no need for a photographer.)

The deal was I could use that name to get into any concert any time and climb the scaffolding. If I took a good picture Cash Box would publish it, to keep up the pretense.
