Netflix Subscribers:
Your thoughts on your service? The wife and I are pondering a subscription and wondered if we could receive any subscriber input to avoid any possible headache scenarios.

THANKS in advance!

3. I love it
because you can get absolutely anything on DVD. That means lots of documentaries and foreign films that never make it to a local cinema or on television.

I think I have an email somewhere that would extend your free trail period to a full month. Let me know if you want me to send it to you. (I get nothing out of this myself, by the way).

6. They're pretty cool, but there's fairly substantial rumors of throttling.
http://www.manuelsweb.com/netflixjournal2.htm

I, too, notice that my rentals seem to get acknowledged later and shipped later than when I first got the service.

Still, I like it. I just think it's kind-of crummy that they make it look like they don't try to control how many DVDs you get a month.

15. Interesting:
If you are reading this, you have probably already been burned by Netflix. Your first few weeks as a Netflix customer were wonderful. You started catching up on all of those movies you had missed, watched a new DVD almost every night, and you were amazed by what a wonderful value you had found.

Sadly, things turned ugly after the first couple months of your membership. Suddenly, your returned DVDs took days to arrive, and your new DVDs took an extra day or two to ship. You began to grow queasy as you discovered that your unlimited rental plan had some substantial hidden limitations.

If this has happened to you, it is not a mistake or anomaly, and it is not the fault of USPS (contrary to Netflix claims). Netflix’s software has identified you as a heavy user (an unprofitable frequent renter), and Netflix has chosen to throttle your flow of DVDs. Essentially, Netflix has subjected you to a series of artificial, software-driven delays that reduce their costs by limiting your rentals during each billing cycle.

Now that you know what Netflix is doing to you, you are furious and want to get revenge by telling them that you are canceling your membership because you are not getting enough DVDs. The catch is that this measure is very ineffective and exactly what Netflix wants. If you are a heavy user, you are unprofitable, and Netflix will be thrilled to learn that they successfully throttled you right off of their membership rolls.

I still can't argue with even $2 average DVD rentals (OK, the mom-and-pop down the street lets you rent older ones on Wednesday for 99c, but I wanna do this on my time!). And I never used to watch like 2-5 movies a week before I had it. Plus they have tons of movies - I have over 400 in my queue, and have discovered some through it.

Plus everyone's got a Blockbuster horror story. :) I wonder it that'll make Netflix win out over Blockbuster.

Oh, and Netflix is a lot bluer than Blockbuster, a big Republican donor.

The only problem is that if you forget you have the DVDs out you end up paying the monthly fee for nothing because your queue is stagnant. But, that's your own damn fault. I certainly recommend it.

9. We love it. Have used them for about 2 years, and are very happy with it.
We haven't run out of stuff to watch, but because we don't have regular TV or cable, we're behind on all the HBO series, so that is the majority of what we get through Netflix.

My only complaint is that sometimes when we rent some of the more popular DVDs, we get ones that are scratched. It can be very frustrating to be watching a film, and right at the climax (always seems to happen at the worst time), the DVD skips back to the opening credits, or some other bizarre thing. We've gotten some special cloths to clean them, so we try to clean them before viewing.

Give it a try, what do you have to lose?

what it's all about. I don't watch many movies but it sure is nice to get on the computer, type what you want, and it arrives in the mail. The turnaround time is fast(2 or 3 days)and never having to return a movie is worth the price itself.

And depending on where you live, the turnaround is almost overnight. At least mine is. There is a distribution center near me, so when I send one back, they send me another one, which I receive in 24 hours.

14. They were great at first
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 02:45 PM by SiouxJ
I've had it about a year now and when I first signed up I got my movies unbelievably fast - like 2 days; 3 tops. They would usually tell me they had received my movie the day after I mailed it back to them but now they wait like 3 days to tell me they've received it, so I know they're either lying or so backed up that they don't get to my return for days. So, at first I was so unbelievably pleased that I got all my friends to sign up and even bought a year subscription for my parents as a gift. Now I'm not quite as happy with them as the turn-around has slowed way down. What used to take 3 days now takes about 6. I'm getting kind of pissed about that but the concept itself is fantastic and well worth the money.

20. How many movies do you rent in a month?
Apparently there is something called "throttling" going on with high use customers, which we could be at risk of being as we watch less than 5 hours of television a week.

26. Not a lot
Probably 8 on average I'd guess. There are some months when I rent more but some months I find it hard to watch 4. I wouldn't call myself a high volume renter. I really think what happened is they weren't prepared for their success. The slow down happened just after Christmas for me and I know a lot of people who got Netflix subscriptions as gifts. Just a theory. I'm hoping it will go back like it was. I was so impressed at first that I bought a ton of their stock.

27. Yes, I am being throttled
Anything less than 2 bucks per movie is supposedly unprofitable. See my post below. I WAS renting 3 movies a week, or about 12 a month. I think the subscription cost is like 18 bucks plus tax, so I definitely qualify, and my service has slowed down noticeable.

But I am still going to stick with it.

17. On a scale of 1-10, I give it an 7.5
The service has really slowed down for me. I used to return my movies monday morning and the new ones would arrive Wednesday. Now they don't arrive till thursday or friday, sometimes not till the next week, very aggravating. On the bright side, I don't have to leave the house, and they have pretty much any movie you can imagine.

Also they are a blue company.

28. I've been "throttled" by netflix.
Rented about a dozen movies in the first month and every one was delivered and returned in one business day. Since the first month, not one single disk has made it here or back in less than two business days. Most have taken 3-5 days in transit.

I still like the concept and love the selection but I'm convinced the service has been deliberately cut back.

29. I'm finding this all very interesting
I think we (all of us) should compare notes as to when (what date) the slow down occurred. I noticed sometime in January I think.

The other thing that pisses me off about them is it's so hard to complain. Ever try to find a phone number? Sure, you can email them but sometimes I want to talk to someone. Last time I looked, I couldn't find a phone number.

To compliment them, they are very forgiving about lost discs. I lost one myself, and one was lost in the mail and both were forgiven; no questions asked. This happened all within one month too so they had every right to be suspicious, but they weren't. Just sent me replacements.

36. Thanks!
Well it makes sense but then again it could just be that they weren't prepared for all the new customers they recently gained too. It could be that they are going overboard to accommodate all the new customers and letting us old timers experience some delays as they know they've already got us hooked. My parents (new customers) have not had any slow down since signing up in December and my Dad rents way more than I do. He's retired, so he has lots of time to watch movies. I bet he watches 12 - 15 a month (I watch 8 at the most) and he hasn't been "throttled." On the contrary, he gets his faster than I get mine.

I guess time will tell.

35. Devil's advocate: I've never been throttled.

In the years I've been using Netflix my turnaround has gotten BETTER as they put is distrubtion centers closer to my home town. Now if I drop a movie in the mail on Monday I have my next movie delivered at my house on Wednesday. Without fail, and without delay.
