No pun intended. Well, maybe a little.

I started smoking in VietNam when the army gave me free cigarettes. Well, they weren't really free. All you folks at home were paying for them.

Getting the patch in a few days. I gotta quit. My daughter says so and who can say no to their daughter?

12. The national average is BS
I too have this nasty habit. I will one day heed the wisdom of my 13 year old daughter and quit like my wife did.

However.......the national average is a tool to make us feel like a minority. Look around, 19%?? I don't think so. 30-35 is probably closer to the truth.

I think I will give it up. Maine is a smokers state, in lots do. It cost alot so you buy in NH.It is odd people have put such bad things on smoking yet mills still pump out all that stuff, gas sends out stuff and then people put wood stoves in their homes and burn anything.Oh well, we will not let people smoke pot, yet drinking kills thousands a year in cars and things. I guess you pick your own evil.

26. Don't start smoking, dude! People who start as teenagers often
have a very hard time quitting, plus it's expensive , and potentially bad for you. I say potentiall bad for you because I suspect that some people have a genetic make-up that allows them to "survive" smoking without ever getting lung cancer of other smoking-associated diseases. Most everybody knows someone like that.

And, yes, I started smoking as a teenager but it was a dumb thing to do -- kind of like teasing my hair -- and I managed to quit after five years. (Yes, quit teasing my hair, too, LOL) About fifteen years later, I discovered I could have a cigarette every now and then without becoming addicted again, which was cool, but I don't even do that now. You could end up looking like this:

:smoke:

Red in the face, short of breath, having to wear shades all the time to hide your watery eyes and crow's feet (heavy smokers get more WRINKLES!)

Edited on Wed Oct-15-03 03:24 PM by LynneSin
and don't fool yourself into thinking you do.

Smokers claim that smoking helps "calm their nerves" - those nerves are all jittery because their body is craving for another cigerette and by only adding more nicotine into their system will they feel calm.

If you really feel you "Need Something Like that" you need a good whap across the foreheard!!

27. I don't smoke but I let other people smoke for me.
It's a vile and filthy habit however, I am not one to be anal retentive about other people who do it. The only time I have a problem with it if it's morning and I want the first breath of fresh air or if I am sick then get it away from me.

38. I'm asthmatic
I'd be dead by now if I smoked. I can't even deal with having more than a couple of candles lit in a room, and any kind of smoke, even from a barbecue, makes me wheezy and ill very quickly.

Both my parents smoked - my mother was the worst kind of chain-smoker, lighting one right off the butt of the other all day long - and none of us kids have ever smoked. We were all so grossed out by it - plus it's damned expensive to smoke that much. I don't know how people afford it.

45. I have zero sympathy (or empathy) for smokers
Edited on Wed Oct-15-03 10:36 PM by Prisoner_Number_Six
I believe that all smokers should be made to spend a week tending the terminally ill in a cancer ward. The smoking rate would drop to zero in exactly that same week. Ever watch someone melt away as their lungs fill with green and black goo? The pain and suffering is incredible. They end up as walking skeletons, their transparent parchament-skin wrapped hanging off their bodies. Listen to them struggle to take a deep breath, and then another, and then....

How much does a pack cost these days? $3.50 or thereabouts? Lemme see-- a pack a day @3.50 is $1,277.50 per YEAR, times let's say ten years-- $12,775.00 up in smoke. If you live that long, that is...

Why the hell would ANYONE be willing to pay that price for the privilege of slowly poisoning their own bodies, along with creating all that suffering for those close to them, often in the same home? Children and friends getting that contact addiction from all the nicotine saturating the second smoke and haze they're forced to breathe? Walking around all day with that sickly burned ashy smell saturating all your clothes, and stinking up your hair and skin? The yellow stains on your fingers and your teeth? And waking up in the morning, literally coughing your lungs out, not able to breathe deeply enough to clear the viscious slime from your airway. Gasping shallowly, struggling to suck enough oxygen into your system to keep from getting dizzy...

Forget it. I ain't no chump. I prefer breathing deeply and living longer to all that shit.

for one, I don't want the government to pay for anything for me. I want them to stay out of my life. And if you think that I'm going to sit in a hospital for the last days of my life, you've got another thing comin'.

So don't worry. I won't be taking one penny of your money.

Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 12:12 AM by SoCalDem
smokers "contribute" their social security money they don't live long enough to collect.. It's probably a wash:shrug:

Donut lard and pizza cheese probably account for an equal amount of clogged arteries, and the factories & cars ruin lungs too :(

56. I smoked from 16-19
I was stressed a few years ago and briefly smoked about 1-2 packs a week for almost a year, but I hate the smell, I hate my breath, and it's a pain because I wouldn't do it in the house because other people didn't deserve any second hand smoke. Gave it up and don't expect to ever start again. I like to smell good and breath clearly more than I liked smoking.
