For that matter, we sure didn't have recruiting problems for Afghanistan right after 9-11.

As far as I know, and I would have to research this, unless the public does not support the war, we have not had recruiting problems.
Vietnam, and now Iraq. Imagine that.

1. We had underage boys lying about their age to serve in WWII.
:hi:

4. I forgot about hearing that!
I remember shortly after 9-11 that people were lined up to enlist. Such a short time ago.

2. Yes
They had to conscript people. The current force is all volunteer.

If the WWII army had to rely on volunteers, it never would have left the US.

3. I suppose I meant to say that in WWII there weren't as many

deserters or people who headed for Canada.

I have a feeling we are headed for a draft.

Did they have a problem in WW2 with people avoiding the draft? I suppose I could google it.

:)

7. Those who went to Canada in WW-2
would include Americans who wanted to fight Hitler before Pearl Harbor.

10. The Commonwealth had been at war for two years before Pearl Harbour.
It's okay about you guys being late for the last two World Wars...I'm sure you'll be really punctual for the next one.

12. Bush thinks he made up for it with Iraq
It's ok that one war wasn't finished and Osama is still out. We needed to "keep our momentum" going.

5. In WW2, they had guys storming the recruiting offices right after
Pearl Harbor. Even without a draft, I think there would have been enough men. I do think WW1 was the same way.

6. The draft was fairer in WWII and had more support, as did that war.
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 01:13 PM by mcscajun
"In all, 2.5 million of the 3.5 million Americans who served in WWI were conscripted through this process. Not only did it prove successful in meeting the demand for soldiers during the 18 months that America was at war, it did so in a way that enjoyed broad support from the American people and was applied fairly across the social stratum. In WWII this system was once again put to use, this time on an even larger scale, inducting 10 million of the 16 million Americans who served in uniform during the war."

13. I know, I know
But I didn't hear stories of people running away from it like Bush did in Vietnam. It seems like when the wars have the support of the people, they don't have the problems like they did in Nam and now in Iraq.

Roll with me here.

14. Well, those same people that Bush is trying his hardest to screw are
the ones that volunteered to go fight a war they believed in. Medals be damned, they all had their bennies cut thanks to Bush, and people say that liberals don't support the troops :eyes:

15. Yes, Bush doesn't support the troops
I think the only guy in the administration who did was Powell. He went ballistic over the memo to now atty General Gonzales justifying torture. That Abu Graib stuff is going to hurt our troops for a long time, and the administration has no clue as to how much. By using torture, we have totally hurt our credibility as leaders of nations.
