North Dakota Third-Grader Rides To School On A Mule

BISMARCK, N.D. -- A third-grader in North Dakota has a half-hour commute that is making many of her classmates jealous.

The girl trots to her one-room school south of Bismarck most mornings on the back of her 4-year-old mule, Ruth.

The 9-year-old said she feels much more safe on the mule than in a car or bus.

She gets up at dawn to brush and feed Ruth before going to school. And once there, she gets help from her classmates and ties Ruth to a tree.

The girl said if it were up to her, she would ride the mule to school every day, but her father insists she take more modern transportation when the temperature drops below freezing.
