Watching The Battle of the Bulge on AMC.

An American soldier climbs on top of a German tank and drops a grenade through the open hatch. The open hatch is dumb, but that's not it.

Immediately after the explosion the soldier looks into the tank. The entire crew is dead, but relatively unmarked. No, that's not the dumb part either.

As he's peering into the tank, he hears, on the GERMAN radio, in the GERMAN tank, the GERMAN tank squadron commander radioing instructions to his fleet in perfect ENGLISH. Aha! Now he knows what the enemy will do!

the idea that a radio set full of delicate tubes would have survived the force of the confined explosion of a grenade. :-)

That's how most movies indicate when a character is speaking German.

Another reason that movies like Patton, The Longest Day and Tora!Tora!Tora! are much better made! Germans and Japanese speaking in their own language! What a concept!

5. WWII was mostly a bloodless conflict

The only injuries were mostly to the lower leg and shoulder and the guys from the country did most of the dying whilest the wise-n-acres from New York threw down their cigarettes in discussed but almost always made it through.

7. Watched "The Big Red One" the other day - stupid scene 238

Bunch of German soldiers setting up an ambush around a disabled German tank.

Officer is telling them to lie around and not move, give the GI scout a "round trip" to set up the ambush.

All in english. Wonder if "round trip" was even that common of a phrase in the mid-forties . . .

8. Dumb scenes #239 / dumb scenes from war movies

In 'Black Hawk Down' there is a scene where a Muslim man is praying on the beach to a rising sun. In Mogadishu if he were on a beach and he were facing the sun rising over the ocean, he would be facing east. Mecca is due north of Mogadishu. Fucking bigoted Ridley Scott, the scene is more alluring if he is praying to the sun on a beach, Islam is not an animist religion asshole. Muslims pray facing Mecca. And I am sure he was going on the fact that Americans knowledge of geography is disgraceful. I noticed it immediately.
