I met John Lewis!
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 10:31 AM by Whitacre D_WI
Last night, at a reception for Congressman Ron Kind (WI-3), I got to meet a real American hero. No, I'm not talking about G.I. Joe, I'm talking about John Lewis.

For those of you who don't know about Congressman Lewis, he represents Georgia's fifth CD. He is also (I believe) the last surviving speaker from 1963's March on Washington. From 1963 to 1966, he served as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committe.

Congressman Lewis shook my hand and wished me luck in my campaign against Jim Sensenbrenner.

Hear that? A man who brought himself up from poverty in the segregated South, marched with Dr. King, and has represented Atlanta in Washington since 1986 wished me well.

I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl right now.

On edit: Corrected Congressman Kind's district. He is in CD3. I, on the other hand, am the one running for CD5. Sorry for any confusion, but rest assured that I am often confused myself

Another edit: replaced the possibly-not-a-word "funning" with "running."

4. He was the speaker..
at my daughter's grad school graduation last year at Lesley University (in Cambridge, next to Harvard).

It was wonderful to hear him speak, but sad that the majority of the students and guests were totally unresponsive (at best) when he (and the college president) spoke about the importance of going out and making waves, disobeying rules and challenging assumptions and such to work for a more just and better world.

A few of us clapped loudly and made noise when he made points, and people looked at me as if I was crazy.

Extra disappointing since the majority of the students were, I believe, in the field of either education or mental health.
