Recomendation needed: Mid-priced scanner/color printer.
I'm in the market for a scanner/color ink jet printer, sometimes referred to as an 'All-in-One'.

I'm looking for something in the $300 range, give or take a hun or so.

The Epson Stylus Photo RX620 is my starting point.

Advice?

1. My experience with the 3-in-ones has been that they were
very prone to malfunction due to the complexity. We have gone to a good dedicated black and white printer that does 22 pages per minute and a good fax machine that also scans. There are some great color printers that are very cheap. That's because they make their money on the replacement cartridges that are expensive. We use the fast black and white for bulk printing and save our color printer for special
photo work. But, all of this has gone beyond your $300 limit.

2. I Have an Epson Stylus All-in-One
I don't recall the model no., but the one you mention sounds familiar. Mine is a printer/copier/scanner (no fax). I've had mine for about a year, and it's given great service. I especially like the separate color cartridges. A lot of my printing really uses red ink, so it's more economical to replace only the red cartridge.

3. I have had success with HP multis.
On both Windows and Linux, believe it or not. I would use them again.

9. I have an HP all-in-one that we didn't spend more than $100 on.
I have the hp psc 1110 all-in-one. It's a printer-scanner-copier combo. It works great. The print quality is good too, just maybe not as fast as more expensive models, but I wouldn't say it prints slowly either.

4. The only advice I can give is..
Look into the print cartridges to each printer. I guess you know that, but that is what ends up costing the big cash in the long run. I use a Lexmark X-83 all in one, and it's not bad. It was fairly cheap, but I think they are up to another model already.
It really seems to come down to the price of the cartridges.

13. Look at ink prices
I have an HP officejet that I am quite happy with, but, over time the cost of ink will FAR outwiegh the cost of the machine. I have a good friend that manages the largest copy machine co. in the city, they don't sell HP but he says thats what they use in the office for desktop machines. Warning--Brother machines suck!

6. Be wary of Lexmark.
The one we have just guzzles ink. It's a good scanner, but the printer has a tough time grabbing the sheet level, so often a printout is a little skewed on the page. I believe it's an X83, a few years old, so maybe they have improved by now.

Epson or HP are, in my experience, better.

8. We just bought one; Mrs. V. highly recommends it (I haven't used it yet):
HP OfficeJet 6210 Oxi All-In-One.

Says Mrs. V.: "It's a lot of printer for the money. I highly recommend it."

It also sends/receives faxes. It cost $179 at BJ's Warehouse (like Costco).

11. I was noticing the HP seems to be behind the design curve......
..when compared to Epson.

I sense that you question their reliability as well?

12. Absolutly. For reasons outside the topic of this thread, my school
insists on letting every worker have their own little HP. It's an incredibly stupid and wasteful policy, but at least it did open my eyes as to how shitty HP printers, aside from the office-sized laser printers, really are.

In short: They suck.
