Glaxo Pulls Two Drugs As Safety Fears Grow

GLAXOSMITHKLINE has been forced to pull two top drugs amid safety fears, on the day it emerged that boss Jean-Pierre Garnier took home Pounds 2.4m last year.

Antidepressant Seroxat and diabetes treatment Avandamet have been removed from shelves in America because of 'manufacturing issues'. The pills are thought to be defective.

Glaxo's shares tumbled 29p to Pounds 12.89, wiping Pounds 1.7bn off its market value.

Yesterday U.S. marshals swooped on GSK's factory in Puerto Rico and a distribution centre in Knoxville, Tennessee.

They seized supplies of Seroxat and Avandamet at the behest of the allpowerful Food Drug Administration.

Both products were made at the Puerto Rico plant, where the FDA had previously identified production problems.

According to the US watchdog, the action was taken to 'prevent harm' to patients.

Authorities believe Seroxat tablets are prone to breaking up, while the key ingredient in Avandamet is not evenly distributed throughout the pill.

Sales of Seroxat, known as Paxil in the U.S., were Pounds 396m last year while Advademet and its sister drug Avandia had combined revenues of Pounds 1.16bn.

Meanwhile Irish drugs group Elan suffered its second major setback in a week. A potentially-fatal infection has been confirmed in a second person who had been taking its multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri. Elan's shares plunged to e4.64.
