Carly Simon’s Secret REVEALED (kind of)
I was reading wxmike’s “Favorite Number One Song Of 1973” thread and was reminded of this:

One morning, Howard Stern was trying to get Carly Simon to name the person whom “You’re So Vain” was written about. The identity of this person is Carly’s definitive secret, so she, as always, refused to give a name. But she did make an amazing, first-time revelation that morning. Without explaining, she quietly indicated that the song was written about more than one person.

Though the revelation went completely unnoticed (by everybody except by me) and went over everybody’s head (except mine), what she seemed to be saying is that the chorus -- “You’re so vain…I bet you think this song is about you” -- is about a different person than the rest of the song.

IN OTHER WORDS, the song REALLY ISN’T “about you.”

It entirely changes the underlying theme one of the greatest songs in the history of music!

Now you know one of rock n’ roll’s greatest secrets -- a secret that nobody else in the world knows (except me and Carly).

But now Carly has two secrets.

-- When you're finished listenting to Rumours, give "You're So Vain" a listen.

3. Oh man, my head's going to explode now.
I had no idea. This is so great. So many sleepless nights and now I can finally rest.

I should have known. I just should have.

5. You mean that's not from neutron absorption?
So my own tinfoil hat has been useless! Arrgh!

I always thought that Carly Simon's big secret was the list of names of famous people she, uh, dated.

7. I don't know about your hat. Shiny side in or shiny side out?
If the shiny side is in, your memory of sleeping with Carly has probably been erased but somehow you just know that the song is about you.

6. I Read Once That the Song Was Written About...
Warren Beatty, whom she had dated beforehand. Her recent revelation - that 'You're So Vain' was written about more than one person - doesn't knock Warren Beatty out of contention.
