Welcome to Central Park... say the gates...

It was beautiful there this morning, with new snow and tourists from all over the world.

Our dog has friends from 3 continents just from this morning. She was in a very silly mood.

Overall impression?

Nice. Not Christo's best work, but very interesting.

4. There's nothing to get
He even said that in his description of the work, hang on, lemme find it... ok, now it's not up on the page anymore, but basically he said that it's not supposed to represent anything, it just IS. Hrm.

6. Ars Gateica (apologies to Archibald MacLeish)
The Gates should be palpable and mute
As a globed fruit,

Dumb
As old medallions to the thumb,

Silent as the sleeve-worn stone
Of casement ledges where the moss has grown--

The Gates should be wordless
As the flight of birds.

*

The Gates should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs,

Leaving, as the moon releases
Twig by twig the night-entangled trees,

Leaving, as the moon behind the winter leaves,
Memory by memory the mind--

The Gates should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs.

*

The Gates should be equal to:
Not true.

For all the history of grief
An empty doorway and a maple leaf.

For love
The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea--

The Gates should not mean
But be.

5. There's a strong contrast
between the inexact beauty of nature in the park and the uniform, monotone, repetitive look of Christo's orange arches. I usually prefer the beauty of nature better.

7. I think that is exactly the point, or counterpoint
as the case may be.
I just find it amazing, the dynamic of people's feelings about it.
