Has anyone here hacked their xbox?
Edited on Thu Oct-09-03 09:19 PM by dawgman
Not that I condone anything illegal, but the possibilities are intriguing. Just wondering if it's feasible for the non-techie.

here are some of the things that I find interesting....733 mhz processor, possibility for up to 137 gb of hdd space...ability to run operating system on it...networking it with my PC...

So how does this all relate to your xbox? Well, like I said, your xbox is very much like a personal computer. It has a processor, a DVD-ROM drive, a display adapter, a sound adapter, a hard disk drive, and most importantly a BIOS. Not bad for $200, eh? When you turn on your xbox, it does its own little POST, goes to the BIOS, plays that flubber animation thing, and looks to the DVD-ROM for an authentic xbox game or a DVD movie. If it does find one of those things, it will boot up the game; or, if it’s a DVD movie, it will play it (if you have Microsoft’s little DVD playback kit installed, which is a dongle that connects to one of the controller ports that unlocks the DVD-ROM drive). If it doesn’t find either of these (it’s very picky), then it boots up it’s own little OS referred to as the dashboard. This is that green screen with the three menu options like “Settings”, “Music”, and “Memory,” or something like that. We want to replace the BIOS so it’s not so picky about what it will execute.

1. Probably
If the software was provided on a CD-ROM and I think it would be better in the long run.

Maybe one out a thousand people wouldn't think about doing anything like that, but that one guy does think and work around the limitations imposed on the electronics and software.

...like that guy being sued by through the DCMA act because he discovered all you had to do was to hit the "Shift" key when you wanted to copy a CD?

2. I don't own an xbox, but looks like fun.
They're pretty powerful computers. And I've heard of people running Linux on them. Here's a website that might be useful:

4. Not only intriquing, but limitless.
The Xbox, with all its gaming power, is built entirely off of off the shelf computer parts. Anything you can do with a puter can, and probably has been done with an Xbox. One of the stranger things I've seen is that someone took mods made for the PC version of Elder Scrolls Morrowind, got them on the Xbox Harddrive and played those mods on his Xbox version of Elder Scrolls Morrowind. That shouldn't be possible.

As long as you don't distribute anything, you can legally hack your Xbox to hell and back.
