Fear and Loathing at the all night Exxon gas station
Around 1973 I found myself working at an all night Exxon across the road from a Jack-In-The-Box during high school. Of all the stories from the hijinks one can have at an all night gas station my favorite has to be the one where we smoked hash all night, read Hunter S. stories to each other and chunked rocks across the street to see who could put Jack's lights out. The war was over, the hash was at it's best when chased with Boone's Farm, and we had Rolling Stone. Hunter Thompson delivered us from the 60's, he showed us the shambles of crooked politics, corporate American greed, and how to properly mix prescription drugs and alcohol. America's youth no longer believed in "flower power" or "power to the people", we lost too many of our young and our innocence with a senseless war and a president hell bent on destroying liberalism and free thought.

Hunter S. took on those demons for us, as well as his own and fought them in his own unique way just as he fought his demon with his last breath, I'm sure he has won his battle. I look back on it now and think, "Hunter fought Tricky-Dick while we chunked rocks at the big glowing head across the street" somehow I get a little comfort in that.

Michael Harris

Rest easy my brother Hunter S, the times will soon be changing.
