SOS proposes raising fine for parking in handicapped spot to $500.

Just heard on the news that our SOS has proposed raising the fine for illegally parking in a handicapped space to $500--- for the first offense! Subsequent violations would be $750 and $1000.

Can't say this makes me unhappy. My mother lost her mobility near the end of her life and those spaces were very helpful.

Upon more thought, I agree that a full $500 for a 1st offense is steep, but I do agree with a monetary fine.

10. Another reason why:

Places like Home Depot and Lowes have way more handicapped spots than are ever filled. Maybe it's a local ordinance based on square footage of building or parking lot.
I have a gamey leg, but no handicapped sticker.
It's kind of a pain when I have to park a block out into the lot when there are a dozen handicapped spaces vacant.

That pisses me off more than almost anything. And get this, 9 out of 10 times I've seen it happen, the vehicle's an SUV plastered with Bush/Cheney stickers. Fuckers.

Use someone else's placard, or use a fake one, and your license will be suspended for up to one year and you will be fined $500.
