"Let the punishment fit the crime"
I saw "The Mikado" at our hight school tonight. I was shocked...not only were the kids good, the show was hilarious! (I really know nothing about Gilbert and Sullivan)
The Mikado sings a song in which he explains how kind he is, in that he punishes criminals appropriately. So...
...how about some appropriate punishments for * and some of his partners in crime?

1. Are you a parent or a student?
It's always good to see young people put on a good Gilbert and Sullivan production. High school seems not so long ago.

2. Hope they did this one...

Three little maids from school are we,
Pert as a school-girl well can be,
Filled to the brim with girlish glee,
Three little maids from school!

YUM-YUM.

Everything is a source of fun. (Chuckle)

PEEP-BO.

Nobody's safe, for we care for none! (Chuckle)

PITTI-SING.

Life is a joke that's just begun! (Chuckle)

THE THREE.

Three little maids from school!

My older daughter was in all the high school drama productions, but she graduated, so I went to this one with my younger daughter, who had friends in the cast.
Oh, they did a lot of songs that I loved..."Titwillow" was hysterical. I really had no idea that it was so funny! The key seems to be good enunciation...the songs are quite clever, but you must hear the words clearly to enjoy them. The drama teacher went to Japan last year on a Fulbright, so I guess that was her inspiration to put on this show.

4. My object all sublime,
I will achieve in time
to let the punishment fit the crime
the punishment fit the crime

and may each criminal then
unwillingly represent
a source of innocent merriment
of innocent merriment

5. get a good CD of the opera ; it should have the complete

libretto enclosed, with all the lyrics.

That will help w/ the crimes and punishments for * etc. and keep the
rhythm.

It is traditional for the cast to inject something topical, local if possible, but at least something contemporary to the audience.

When I saw it a few years ago there were a few Clinton jokes in "I've got a little list"

not nasty enough to make me angry, quite subtle, but enough

on edit: one of my favorite musical works, bar none. I quite sincerly would go see the Mikado presented by a day care center or nursing home, I love it that much.

I have seen a high school production
a junior college production
a lyric opera company production
a tv version with Groucho Marx as KOKO
another tv version with Eric Idle as KoKO
and a couple of opera co versions on TV (a Canadian one for sure, don't know about the other one)
