I can't study Bush in my report about facists in my Amer Gov't class
Edited on Sun Oct-05-03 02:59 PM by breezygirl
We each have to pick facist and do a report on him or her (mostly him). And Dubya wasn't on the list. Typo, I guess.

Anyway, so now I'm doing Alfredo Stroesser. Don't know much about him except he's from Paraguay. Dr. Scott, my teacher, says he's a classic though.

edited for clarification

Fransisco Franco, from Spain. Some dude from Portugal. And another one from Indonesia, I think it was Suharto, but please don't quote me on that. Another guy, Mabuto, I think his name was, from Asia somewhere...

I ought to go get my backpack and look...

Oh! And a dude from Chile.

EDIT: Pinochet1 that's the guy from chile

4. Franco's Your Best Bet
Franco's rise to power runs right into a study of the (fascinating) Spanish Civil War.

Bibliographical reference: "Homage to Catalonia" by George Orwell.

Nothing better. Franco subjected Spain to fascist rule for 38 years. You could not find a better subject to study.

9. I kinda wanted to do him, he was on our list
Probably because my cousin's living in Spain right now. Someone else took him, unfortunately. I was awfully interested on this subject, though. I really ought to look all of these guys up.

12. Orwell's Your Best Bet
If you want to understand fascism in general, Orwell's book "Homage to Catalonia" is probably your best bet.

Or (if your stomach can stand it), of course, "Mein Kampf."

I've been a student of fascist propaganda for 30 years (lifelong liberal, by the way.) "Mein Kampf" should be read by any student of this corrosive, vile ideology. If only for the reminder that the Big Lie is alive and well, being practiced by the Pubbie Spin Machine. (A friend of mine calls it "THE MIGHTY WURLITZER.")

15. i read 1984 in 6th grade and actually got it, much to my dad's surprise
I knew my mom wouldn't want me to read it, (It's got people doing "the dirty deed," as she called it) but dad didn't think I'd understand it, and was surprised when I did.

22. 1984's Fiction; "Homage to Catalonia" is factual
1984's a great read, no doubt. But "Homage to Catalonia" was written after Orwell, an English socialist, spent 6 months fighting on the front for the Republicans (not our kind of "Republicans" -- these were the people who had established a democracy, and the targets of Franco's fascist army).

Orwell's also not too kind to the Soviets - he says they sold the Spanish Republicans out (by actively opposing their side in the Spanish civil war), thereby leading to Franco's fascist victory.

8. Can't You Ask Your Instructor?
I would, tell him why and write a dynamite report.

All he can do is say no but he would have to come up with a damm good reason not to allow your essay.

He was all right actually. He behaved better than my dog, who's white and jumped on his black suit. That sure surprised me.

P.S.: funner should be a word. it rocks!

23. Do it on Bush anyways.
OR, do an epilogue on Bush and how he compares to the fascist you chose. Seriously. If he is the person who first comes to your mind, you must engage your critical mind's call to shed light on that. uh hum.

31. "FASCIST, defination...n.[1]. a philosophy ar system of government that
that advocates or exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, together with an ideology of belligerent nationalism." you might have to go to a dictionary older than 10 years, when the corporations merged with the publishing companies they rewrote the definition of Fascist...to hide their part in it... I would love to get an "F" on that paper!!!!, let me know if this older definition of Fascism form an 1980's American Heritage Dictionary is the same as the one they gave you...I am very interested if they did. Thanks
