Regarding F9/11 and the Oscars...
Since the nominations were announced today, and it has already come up, so we don't have to repeat it eight bazillion times:

MICHAEL MOORE DID NOT SUBMIT FAHRENHEIT 9/11 FOR BEST DOCUMENTARY.

Thank you. Back to your regularly scheduled programming

1. Do you think this thread really matters?
 Of course he DIDN'T submit it. But that won't stop the onslaught of threads explaining the "real truth" as to why he didn't.

4. As I understand it
it's because he wanted it out on video and DVD before the election, so he decided to skip all the Oscar nonsense, since he really didn't care about it.

Who cares if it's not nominated - F9/11 is a hell of a lot more important than some award show where they give out little gold-covered statuettes.

And anyone who thinks that a documentary would be nominated for Best Picture...no, not going to happen.

5. Exactly.
I'm just poking holes in the coming onslaught of "Rove strong-armed the Academy into snubbing F911" threads. Thanks!

7. People who see Rove everywhere please read.
OK, as someone who has NEVER in 20 years lost a cent betting on the Oscars (the only gambling I do, BTW) rest assured the Academy will NEVER nominate a documentary for Best Picture. Why? Because the documentary side of the film industry is outside of the mainstream of the industry and most Academy members do not work in them, nor do the people that work in them belong to the Academy. So, what movies will the Academy nominate? Those that they and their close colleagues worked on. This is also why foreign language films nominated for Best Picture are few and far between. Another reason: most Academy members are actors. Not many actors running around in documentaries.

9. Many in Hollywood thought it was going to happen. No pass for you.
My brother (filmaker, location scout) says the mood there is stunned to say the least.

11. It means we shouldn't pretend to know all. My brother lives and works
in LA. You can find his name credited on many films. I will be honest that the tone of your post and others like it infuriate me. There were many people who expected a nomination to be had for F911.

Thanks. No pass.

12. Also to note,
Michael Moore also might have felt (this is IMHO) that "F 9/11" would have been a lock to win the Best Documentary and wanted give others a chance.

15. I Stand Corrected
I just read the complete list of nominations posted elsewhere in the Lounge. Those are all awards given to the crafters of the film - people who spend their lives making movies and not advancing personal agendas. No nominations at all for the screenplay, the directing, or for best picture. In short, a total snub of Mel Gibson, and his right-wing wacko beliefs.

And richly deserved, IMHO.

Of course, the right-wing fundamentalist assholes like James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, and Pat Robertson will hold this up as proof of Hollywood's bias against Christians.

16. i agree, except for one small part
"right-wing wacko beliefs"

I'm a Catholic and I loved the movie, in fact, never wept bitterly during it. Does that make me a right-wing wacko?

Whether it deserves more nominations, why not? It can be nominated for Best picture, doesn't mean it has to win. But it would be nice if they would at least recognize a movie that did in fact deeply move millions of people.

25. It May Have Moved Many People....
...but I live within 50 miles of the headquarters of Focus On The Family, and I know that Dobson and others used that film to advance their narrow-minded homophobic agenda.

I'm an ex-Catholic myself, and have zero tolerance for those who use religion to spread hate. That's my definition of right-wing wackos.

I did my daily eye rolling / humor review at freeperville, and they're having loads of fun speculating as to how distressed the "DUmmies" are over this.

Oh, the irony - if they only knew the humor that a "demoncrat" lurker was getting out of the many freepers confused at why The Passion wasn't nominated for Best Picture, yet gloating about "at least" getting technical nominations. The contrast with the "who cares what Hollywood elitists think" posts was just beautiful.

:silly:

18. It Was Eligible For Best Pic -- They Sent The DVD To Acad Members
They sent a "for your consideration" DVD out for best pic, editing, direction. My hub put it for best pic but not enough acad members did -- def it was not released in "Oscar season" and the damn voting members have fucking ADD.
