Camper Van Bush
On the way to work today, I was listening to some Camper Van Beethoven and their song Sweethearts came on. This is a truly a great song and I thought, with only minor modifications, it could just as well apply to W.

<<snip>>
'Cause he's living in some B-movie
The lines they are so clearly drawn
In black and white life is so easy
And we're all coming along on this one

<<snip>>
Angels wings are icing over
McDonnell-Douglas olive drab
They bear the names of our sweethearts
And the captain smiles, as we crash
'Cause in the mind of Ronald Reagan
Wheels they turn and gears they grind
Buildings collapse in slow motion
And trains collide, everything is fine
Everything is fine
Everything is fine

1. Great band.....
Seriously, top dollar that band was. So eclectic and refreshing. I miss that time when bands truly tried different things rather than simply slipping themselves into one of the already acceptable and defined niches.

2. They're coming
back. Have been on tour (not that I've got to see them) but here's to a good album sometime in the near future.

5. Ever see "The Monks of Doom?"
They were a Camper offshoot band. Lowery went off to form Cracker and the violin player formed Hieronymous Firebrain. The Monks, however, ROCKED.

8. Rumour of a few West Coast Monks Shows
Edited on Fri Oct-03-03 09:46 AM by lunabush
in the near future. Haven't heard much more on them, but a month ago a friend sent me this listing:

Monks of Doom Shows:
still tentative... (?)

10/18 - Los Angeles, Spaceland

10/23 - Berkeley, Starry Plough

10/24 - San Francisco, Bottom of the Hill

Jonathan may open a few of these with a new band.
Don't know that the drummer, Chris Pedersen, will be back with them for these shows as he currently resides in Australia and made it back for only a handful of CVB shows.

PS - Don't forget that Bowling For Columbine opens to the lovely strains of Camper Van Beethoven's Take the Skinheads Bowling.

6. I saw them this spring... and THEY WERE CALLING FOR IMPEACHMENT!!!!
They talked about being from Texas, and made some very disparaging comments about the RW attempts to redistrict the state-- this was right after the 13 dems left for OK...

David's cousin sings with the band doing backup... they told us her real name was "Peach Brandy Bush". "I'm Peach Bush, I'm Peach Bush... SPELL IT OUT!"

I thought it was pretty awesome, because at the time I thought they were really sticking their necks out-- this was right after the whole Dixie Chicks deal, and they just disapproved of the President-- didn't ask for impeachment.

Great show by the way...

7. I really like the stuff they did with Eugene Chadbourne.
"Camper Van Chadbourne," they called themselves. The had a great medley of Zappa songs on one of their records.

Eugene Chadbourne is the paragon of Country & Western leftism, and perhaps the only major country star (I may be exaggerating here) to play an electric rake. Check out his mid-'90s country opera "Jesse Helms Busted with Pornography." It features a stirring cover of "Take the Skinheads Bowling" by, of course, CVB.
