What's your theme song?
I know it's a retread, but I've been wallowing in the depths of self-loathing and uncertainty lately. I declare this song by Bruce Hornsby my new theme song:

"Hooray for Tom"

Would it really help me to learn
'Bout Frederick the Great and when Rome burned
Wish they'd skip over me when it's my turn
All this useless information
So I can talk way above my station
And I lost when I couldn't spell "congratulations"

Oh, hooray, hooray for Tom
Who won the spelling bee
Spelled the difficult words so right
And now he's on TV
Oh, hooray, hooray for Tom
He's up there for all to see
And I hope someday they'll say hooray for me

Teach me long division
So I can figure out baseball stats
Batting average, fielding percentage and all that
Well, I learned more at home, okay
Learned how to scrap, learned some funny things to say
And I lost when I spelled "bananana"

Well, hooray, hooray for Tom
Who won the spelling bee
Spelled the difficult words so right
And now he's on TV
Hooray, hooray for Tom
He's up there for all to see
And I hope someday they'll say hooray for me

Hooray, hooray for Tom
Who won the old spelling bee
Spelled the difficult words so right
Spelled "crepuscule" so right
And now he's on TV
Hooray, hooray for tom
He's up there for all to see
And I hope someday they'll say hooray
Hope someday they'll say hooray
Well, I hope someday they'll say hooray for me

... that the self-loathing and uncertainty will not last. Guaranteed. All you have to do is endure it and it will sow the seeds of its own demise.

15. I bought it for my 15 year old son -- we both listen to it lots!
He put it on his computer on a loop so it plays that and the other theme songs from the other Star Trek shows over and over again. I haven't tired of it yet. He also has it with the songs from Lion King -- you know "Circle of Life" ect. He can't be all bad if he still listens to that along with what passes for Pop music these days.

27. It is hard for me to like a theme song that has words.
Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 01:13 AM by OrwellwasRight
I understand what you are saying; it is just so out of character from all the other Star Trek songs. It would be like if they made up words to the Law & Order jingle.

Stupid typos. Must. Sleep. Now.

9. I know about those depths.
This has been mine for about a year now. I'd tell you it's going to get better, but I don't know yet. If you need a shoulder, though....

I Don't Know What It Is (Rufus Wainwright)

I don't know what it is
but you got to do it
I don't know where to go
But you got to be there
I don't know where to fall
But I know that its comfortable where
I don't know where it is

Putting all of my time
In learning to care
And a bucket of rhymes
I threw up somewhere
Want a locket of who
Made me lose my perfunctory view
Of all that is around
And of all that I do

So I knock on the door
Take a step that is new
Never been here before
Is there anyone else here too
In love with beauty
Playing all of the games
Who thinks three's company
Is there anyone else who wears slightly mysterious brusies
I don't know what it is

Take a lookin around
At friendly faces
All declaring a war on far off places
Is there anyone else who is through with complaining about what's
Done unto us

So I knock on the door
And I am on the train
Going god knows where to
To get me over
To get me over

Give me heaven or hell
Calais or Dover

I was hoping the train
Was my big number
Stopping in Santa Fe and the arches of Topeka
Though I'm chugging along, put away by the crossing hand
We'll be heading for Portland, or Limburgh or Lower Manhattan
Find myself running around

I don't know what it is so get me over
I don't know what it is so get me over
I don't know what it is so get me over
To get me over
You gotta do it.
You gotta be there.

10. Rain by Steve Conte
Edited on Tue Jan-18-05 11:08 PM by sakabatou
I don't feel a thing
and I stopped remembering
The days are just like moments turned to hours

Mother Used to say
if you want, you'll find a way
Bet mother never danced through fire shower

Walk in the rain, in the rain, in the rain
I walk in the rain, in the rain
Is it right or is it wrong
and is it here that I belong

I don't hear a sound
Silent faces in the ground
The quiet screams, but I refuse to listen

If there is a hell
I'm sure this is how it smells
Wish this were a dream, but no, it isn't

Walk in the rain, in the rain, in the rain
I walk in the rain, in the rain
Am I right or am I wrong
and is it here that I belong

Walk in the rain, in the rain, in the rain
I walk in the rain, in the rain
Why do I feel so alone
For some reason I think of home

11. 'Bridge of Sighs'
The sun don't shine
The moon don't move the tides,
to wash me clean
Sun don't shine
The moon don't move the tides,
to wash me clean
Why so unforgiving and why so cold
Been a long time crossing Bridge of Sighs
Cold wind blows
The Gods look down in anger,
on this poor child
Cold wind blows
And Gods look down in anger,
on this poor child
Why so unforgiving and why so cold
Been a long time crossing Bridge of Sighs

Rumor has it that this song was inspired by the famous Ponte de Sospiri bridge in Venice, also known as the 'Bridge of Sighs.' The bridge got its name in the 17th century, when prisoners who passed through it on their way to the prison cells on the other side would most likely see the beautiful sight of the lagoon and the island of San Giorgio and freedom for the last time.

I like "I Knew the Bride" too.
And: Here Comes the Weekend, Girls Talk, Queen of Hearts, The Race is On, etc, etc. Also his work with Rockpile (When I Write the Book, Heart, Teacher Teacher, I'm Gonna Start Living Again if it Kills Me, ...) - Nick Lowe is a fave of mine too.

25. That's Life
That's life, that's what all the people say.
You're riding high in April,
Shot down in May
But I know I'm gonna change that tune,
When I'm back on top, back on top in June.

I said that's life, and as funny as it may seem
Some people get their kicks,
Stompin' on a dream
But I don't let it, let it get me down,
'Cause this fine ol' world it keeps spinning around

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself, flat on my face,
I pick myself up and get back in the race.

That's life
I tell ya, I can't deny it,
I thought of quitting baby,
But my heart just ain't gonna buy it.
And if I didn't think it was worth one single try,
I'd jump right on a big bird and then I'd fly

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself laying flat on my face,
I just pick myself up and get back in the race

That's life
That's life and I can't deny it
Many times I thought of cutting out
But my heart won't buy it
But if there's nothing shakin' come this here july
I'm gonna roll myself up in a big ball and die
My, My

I see life like a mirror
And I see life so much clearer

We move so quickly
Who knows where the time goes
Where does this road lead?
No one knows, no one knows

Listen to the single heart beating
Rhythm for an ever-changing song

I see life with surprise
And I see life, oh, in your eyes

Take all your troubles
Put them in a common file
Light a fire with reason
Watch it rise, watch it rise

Listen to the single voice singing
Lifted in an ever-growing song

I see life without anger

I see life all together
I see life go on forever

Life goes on forever
Life goes on
