3. The dieting craze has come full circle.
No gimmicks, just common sense. Eat less, exercise more. Oh, and eat RIGHT, too.

5. oh for the love of pete who has 90 minutes a day?
I'm all but unemployed, and I don't have 90 minutes a day to exercise. This is silly on the face of it. 30 minutes a day is not do-able for many people who have both jobs and kids. I don't know how they do it.

8. They get up early.
I am not employed outside the home, so it's a bit easier for me. But folks who work and have kids get their exercise in by getting up early or going to the gym on their lunch break. I don't think that recommending to the American public that they exercise daily is "silly." Even 30 minutes several times a week is better than nothing.

21. not physically possible for many people
I read a book by a neurologist awhile back about extending healthy lifespan and he said the single most important thing you can do, before anything else, to preserve brain health is to find out the amount of sleep you need and to get it. (Yeah, I need to get the citation.)

Some people in his study needed 14 hours a night to be healthy. Can you imagine? In our society, those people have no place. Those who were high achievers had to use drugs to compensate so had no hope of a normal lifespan.

Many many many people need 8 to 9 hours a night to sleep to be healthy. This isn't even like it is uncommon. The person who is getting up early to exercise is not going to live longer and may even live less longer. And they may even take someone with them.

I guess it's a sore spot with me because I have a friend dead in her 40s from an auto accident caused by overwork. She pulled a double shift to make money for the holidays, drove home, fell asleep while driving, was killed instantly.

The lesson was reinforced when I was recently rear-ended by a tired hospital worker.

I have to say, before we worry about the maybe or maybe not benefits of exercise, I'm more worried about the proven benefits of getting sufficient rest.

I would certainly never advise anyone to give up sleep time to get up and exercise. TO me that is just so counter-productive. Your corpse will not necessarily be all that good-looking if you're dead by auto.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.

losing sleep. Like I said, take the time away from TV time or some other leisure activity.

33. "Maybe or maybe not" benefits of exercise?
There is no "maybe" about the benefits of exercise. The benefits of regular exercise have been proven.

I agree that adequate rest is important. How about going to bed 30 minutes earlier? How about doing 30 minutes of exercise while watching a television show in the evening? How about taking a 30 minute walk on one's lunch hour?

23. A lot of people with families that can afford it
Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 11:50 AM by Zing Zing Zingbah
get gym equipment for their homes so that they can exercise whenever it's convenient for them. We don't have any equipment at our place, but we schedule in time to exercise everyday. I think anyone can spare 30 minutes to exercise. Considering how much a lot of Americans watch TV, you can schedule in 30 minutes of exercise everyday by watching 30 minutes less of TV. If you're lucky enough to have your equipment at home, you can actually workout and watch TV at the same time. I don't care a whole lot about watching TV. I just use that as an example of how Americans generally spend their spare time.

35. It's not even that expensive to have equipment at home.
I have a weight bench, a set of free weights, and a variety of cardio videos. I'm getting better workouts at home than I was at the gym (at the gym, I used only the stairclimber and elliptical for cardio - doing the same thing over and over and over; at home, I get better variety by doing different programs each day).

Since my exercise regimen utilizes moving machinery (bicycle clamped to a hampster wheel) I'm not awake enough first thing in the AM to not maim myself trying to ride the thing...
But I still get in 1/2 an hour 2X a week...

34. Who has 4 hours a day to watch television then?
According to this article that's the average amount of daily TV viewing per person in America.

While clearly a lot of people are too bogged down by work and family obligations to maintain a regular exercise program, this stat indicates that the vast majority of Americans must have time. (Unless one is to believe that a small group of people who watch 20 hours of TV a day skew this average.)

10. I split my exercise time
before work and after work. Well, that's my goal. Rarely make both workouts. I'm aiming for 60 minutes, 30 in the morning and 30 in the evening. 60 at one time is a little tougher...time-wise and energy level wise. I need to lose the extra pounds I gained over the holidays, so I'm trying to make both sessions. Sometimes my 30 minutes is just a brisk walk. This morning I made it to a 7am aerobics class. Feeling very virtuous.

11. We took a new approach to eating less....
We stopped being lazy and cook all our meals at home every day. We make a large salad, large vegetable platter and smaller sizes of meat, chicken, pork. We shop for fresh fruits and vegetables twice a week. We eat whole grain bread twice a week. We have poached eggs or oat meat for breakfast.

We eat three smaller meals and two snacks and we don't eat after 7 PM at night. For snacks, we have yogurt, a cup of tea or coffee and a small piece of sweet in the afternoon.

We take our time eating, and we eat all our meals and snacks in the dining room using our good china to create a great atmosphere. We take water and fruit with us on the go.

We only eat out once a month at an exquisite restaurant, fifty dollars per person or more. But we have saved a lot of money we used to waste on daily junk fast foods.

We attended at least five family Holiday parties. We ate at home before leaving, had coffee, a piece of sweet and a glass of wine at the parties. We didn't gain one single ounce.

Individually, we take a 20 minutes speed walk every day. I can't walk with my hub, he has long legs and I slow him down. I've lost 32 lbs and my hubby lost his last nasty 10 lbs.

Unfortunately, he does a LOT of business over lunch with clients and potential clients, and he eats out nearly every day.

19. Better cut out that breakfast "oat meat". That will pack on the pounds.
Seriously you have found the correct formula but let's face it, most people will not follow your example. We need to start redesigning our communities so that it is easier for people to walk more and take the car less often. Then people will be healthier.

30. Right on.
I studied abroad in Spain and lived in Madrid, and took the subway everywhere. I really took a liking to it. Take the closest stop to where you're going, and walk the rest of the way. I probably ate more while I was there than before I left, yet by the time I came home, I had lost probably 15-20 pounds. Just by walking! Doesn't seem like a lot, but just walking places is more effective than people would think.

38. Even when driving somewhere, it's a good idea to park far away
from the entrances. Unless it's raining or snowing (and I have small children with me), I park as far away as I can from the grocery store, Target, the mall, wherever, and I walk. Even those few extra steps with every trip can help.

20. I have also read "Never eat while standing up or reading or watching TV."
Also - "always use a plate for food so that you can see how much you are eating." Of course that only works if you don't keep refilling the plate. Sitting down probably makes that a little less likely.

39. Sitting down also causes most people to eat more slowly.
Eating slowly is a good idea, because it gives the brain time to signal the stomach that you are full. It's also important to savor and taste the food. Eating mindlessly often leads to overeating.

On filling the plate: I always put vegetables on my plate first, filling at least half the plate with vegetables.

14. It should also be noted that all "exercise" isn't created equal.
30 minutes strolling in the park is quite a bit different from 30 minutes of lap swimming. It is rather easy to delude oneself about how much exercise they are getting while walking - or even jogging. Harder to do that while swimming, however.

16. Runners vs. walkers
A runner is passing a walker going the other way

Walker (under his breath) "Injury magnet" :grr:
Runner (under his breath) "Pussy" :grr:

I read that somewhere a few years ago. Swimming is by far the best workout IMHO but you gotta have a pool.

40. Walking is good exercise, but it has to be more than a leisurely
strolling pace (although that's a good place to start for someone who has been inactive for a long period of time).

A brisk walk that leaves one feeling slightly breathless and raises the heartrate is good exercise.

26. Who can argue with "less calories in, more calories out = lose weight."?
The logic is inescapable but then we all knew that, didn't we? So how much education is needed here? Do we have to spend a whole bunch of money telling people what they already know but aren't willing (obviously) to do? Maybe we should instead take some of that money and build sidewalks, crosswalks and bike paths so that people could safely walk or bike instead of taking the car everywhere. Duh.
