Is anyone else just "discovering" U2?
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 08:20 PM by DeposeTheBoyKing
Of course "discovering" is the wrong word. I had never paid much attention to them before, but because of the constancy of "Vertigo" as my latest earworm, I decided to order a few U2 CDs using an Amazon certificate I had. I got "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," "War" and "Achtung Baby." I must say I like "Achtung Baby" the best so far. Perhaps I need to find "The Joshua Tree"? Any other recommendations?

1. Get "The Joshua Tree".
"Actung Baby" is good, but "The Joshua Tree" is better. The music on it, I would describe as beautiful. It feels very spiritual.

2. Yes, get The Joshua Tree. Then The Unforgettable Fire.

My favorite, track for track, is Achtung Baby (that was also my first taste of them). I nerdily think I know every bass line, drum beat, and guitar lick, and vocal styling--I've listened to it that much. :scared:

But I also very much enjoy the other two I named. I find something to enjoy on all their albums though. I just so much enjoy Bono's lyrics (and voice) and their sound. In this paragraph I used the word "enjoy" 59 gabillion times.

3. Hard to go wrong with anything Achtung Baby and prior.....
One of my favorite bands and the one I've been listening to the most consistently for the longest period of time. No matter what music I've been into at any given time over the past 20 years, I've always been listening to u2. I may have been the only metalhead at an Iron Maiden concert with a U2 pin on my jacket, but still.

4. their first two
from the early 80s..."The Boy" and "War". Especially the latter, mostly killer not filler. One song called "Surrender" has been amongst my favourites for about 25 years. The Edge musta just learned how to chime on electric guitar, cuz he does it in every song, but "Surrender" is just beautiful and evocative. Perfect use of that effect.

I know the U2 inside out, from the beginning to the end, in both directions. I even have memorized most of the TV-shows shown to entertain the commuters.

6. I second the nomination for The Joshua Tree.
Among many of their CD's/albums ;) I also have a concert DVD (live in Ireland) and it's awesome.

17. I don't see suckitude, either...
These guys have been making great music for 20+ years...whatever seems to be going on in music, these guys always seem to sell lots of albums and sell out shows. The thing I like about them is that they never try the same thing twice -- they could have come out with Joshua Tree II but instead came out with "Achtung Baby". Both are great.

U2 Rocks!!

8. I discovered U2 years ago and wasn't impressed.
As Jimmy Rabbitt said about U2 in the movie THE COMMITMENTS, "That's fuckin' art-school shite!"

Mr. Rabbitt: "That's the band, is it?"
Jimmy: "Yes"
Mr Rabbitt: "I'll bet U2 are shittin' themselves..."

13. Boy and Unforgettable Fire
Are my faves after Achtung Baby.

I've never understood all the fuss over Joshua Tree.

Zooropa is also toward the top of my fave U2...

15. Achtung Baby better than War????
Sorry, I can't let that slide. Achtung Baby is a re-invention record loaded with tons of schmaltzy pop songs.

War is a take no prisoners political record with some seriously ass-kicking songs. War is inspired.

Achtung Baby seems plastic by comparison. If not for One, it would be a total waste of time.

16. Always liked Achtung Baby the best
Most inventive album of theirs. Joshua Trees a close second, but some of the songs on there just don't hold up anymore and sound a bit dated. Achtung Baby still sounds fresh.
