Got a gig tomorrow night (setlist)
I am doing a solo acoustic gig at a local cafe tomorrow night. I've hopped onstage solo a few times usually just to do a song or two as filler while a friend takes a break but this is my first time alone doing more than one set. I've been performing in a band for a few years now. I'm a guitarist for a bluesrockish band (think Cream, Band of Gypsys) so being onstage does not bother me at all however I am not that much of a singer. Anyway I'm doing two sets of mainly covers so tell me what you think

Song(Original Artist)
1st Set:
Hot Burrito #2(Flying Burrito Bros)
Town Called Malice (The Jam)
Vapour Trail (Ride)
Still Got My Guitar (one of mine)
As Long As You Tell Him (Faces)
They're Red Hot (Robert Johnson)
When You Were Mine (Prince)
Lost Highway (Hank Williams)
Come Get To This (Marvin Gaye)
Don't Think Twice It's Alright (Dylan)

(15 min break)

Before You Accuse Me (Bo Diddley)
Take It As It Comes (The Doors)
Dead Flowers (Rolling Stones)
Don't Tell Me (original)
I Wanna Make It With You (Aretha Franklin)
So Tired of Being Alone (Al Green)
Cemetary Gates(The Smiths)
Remember (Hendrix)
Pretty Boy Floyd(Woody Guthrie)
I Will (Beatles)

What do ya think? Would you enjoy hearing that while reading your pretentious book of the week and drinking a way too expensive beverage?

(BTW I'm playing for free Hot Chocolate and chocolate muffins)

1. Good mix
glad to see you squeezed in both the Smiths and Ride with Woody Guthrie.

BTW do you know about the DU Musicians Group? You may be interested in it...

2. I think you should do a bit of Metal Machine Music, just to get
people to take their heads out of their Nietszche and Hunter Thompson.

7. Well on acoustic
That would require me to just start smashing my guitar with it still plugged in...or I could just fart into a coffee can that will sound just as good

Maybe you can turn the amp to 10 and then beat some black turleneck wearing beret-sporting philosophy major to death with the guitar - or maybe just clamp a contact mike to a mike stand - and call it "music".

Oh, and run it through a fuzz box and a chorus with a 0.2 sec delay.

Of course I would rather beat the fuckhead psuedo-punk wearing the buddy holly glasses, 2 sizes too small t-shirt and with the perfectly gelled bedhead look

11. Take your word for it
actually the town I am from has had quite a few good bands signed here lately so I'm hopeful but not foolish.

I bet LA is overflowing with musicians huh?

9. Thanks
I tried to cover all the bases with it and not sound too obvious. Like you will never catch me doing Yesterday or Sexual Healing.

Luck would be nice but actually having some singing talent would be a whole lot better lol

19. here's the sad tragedy of what people really WANT to hear
Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 07:15 PM by Must_B_Free
Song(Original Artist)

1st Set:
Heard it through the grapevine (Marvin Gaye)
Knockin on heavens door (Dylan)

(15 min break)

Light my fire (The Doors)
Satisfaction(Rolling Stones)
RESPECT (Aretha Franklin)
Foxy Lady (Hendrix)
Twist and Shout(Beatles)

plus:
Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison)
American Pie (Don McLean)
Cheeseburger in Paradise (Jimmy Buffet)
Louie Louie (Kingsmen)
Good Lovin' (Rascals)

.... basically the cheesiest schlock crap you can think of. People don't know what they like as much as they like what they know.

23. And I try like hell to avoid that
I hate it at gigs when performers do the most obvious covers. It boring I want to hear you do something that shows you are a fan of who you are covering.

30. Purposely picking lots of obscure covers
can be just as bad, unless your playing for an audience of musicians who share your exact taste. In the words of Joe Dirt, "It's not what you like, it's the consumer". I'm a bit of a musician myself, & I listen to a bit of blues rock, though admittedly not everything. I don't think I've heard a single one of those songs in your set list.

32. Mix of both
Tired of Being Alone was a #1 R&B hit for Al Green

Pretty Boy Floyd by Woodie Guthrie has been covered by a whoooole lot of people

I just chose songs I know well enough to play live. Its a good mix between obscure and well known. I just dont do classic rock radio songs wether I'm playing with my band or on my own. Besides I'm a 20 yr old white boy from the south if I know these songs there is bound to be someone else who has lol

22. I dont even try
I lower the range quite a bit. I take most of the R&B songs and turn em more into folk songs.

29. I was telling people at work today I hated the 80s music
My reasoning - prior toMTVmusic was about listening and the imagination. THen with videos they already put the pictures in your head you're supposed to see. Video took the magic out of music, but performance puts it back.
