Lyle Lovett's a wingnut??
I had no idea. I thought he was more in the vein of the old school willie nelson/johnny cash populist progressive types and not the mindless nu-nashville fascism

from mtv.com:

With the presidential inauguration just a few weeks away, Washington, D.C., is preparing to shift its focus from politics to parties.
On January 19 and 20, the nation's capital will host dozens of concerts, galas and protest events observing

the second inauguration of President George W. Bush. With the city's hotels, clubs, concert venues and sidewalks being taken over for the more than 100 sanctioned and unsanctioned parties for and by both Republicans and Democrats, finding the most raging party is tough. So we're weeding out the duds and giving you a guide to the best parties the city has to offer, whether you lean left, right or tend to slouch somewhere in the middle.
The Black Tie & Boots Ball, Featuring Ted Nugent and Lyle Lovett
The Texas Society of Washington, D.C., has held its annual unofficial inauguration ball since 1981, and this year, it's being touted as the best party in town — and the hardest to score a ticket for. Tickets are sold out (with a 10,000 person capacity) but can be found on Web sites for upwards of $1,000.

Artists slated to perform on the seven stages include Ted Nugent, ZZ Top, Lyle Lovett, Dexter Freebish, Gary P. Nunn and Robert Earl Kean. The president and his wife are expected to attend

1. The only explanation I can think of is the fact that he's from Texas.
I know not ALL Texans are Bushies, obviously, but many of them are. ZZ Top are Texans also.

3. Robert Earl Keen?
He's a wingnut?

Please, not Lyle Lovett. Please. Oh, dear god, please don't tell me Lyle Lovett's a supporter of Fuckface.

This depression of mine is getting worse by the goddamned minute .....

15. Here's a thread I started in the TX forum
about Robert Earl Keen. Makes me sick too. Somebody replied with a clip from an interview he did where he said he's a lifelong Democrat. I guess it's a Texas pride kind of thing. I'm thinking about sending out a few emails and letting them know that at least one fan is really disappointed in their decision to play.

Robert Earl Keen sells out.

16. Thank you very much
That link was helpful.

You know, there's nothing can make me feel better, though. I understand that it would be smart for them to play, but isn't that a horrible commentary on what our country has become?

Thanks again.

10. Please elaborate.
I'd love to know how and why Lyle "looks just like" a republican.

5. I have a REALLY hard time believing that.
I share a group of mutual friends with Lyle, and I find that incredibly hard to believe. Stevie Ray Vaughan played at the Bush I inaugural, and he sure as hell wasn't a republican. Sometimes the hometown celebs agree to play the festivities simply as an honor to their home state. I sure hope that's the case here.

6. I think he's apolitical
Texans put Texas first, and I see this as him respecting a WH invitation, no matter how illegitimate the government, or phony the Texan in question. If a Texan is invited to the coronation, they will go. Same with ZZ Top.

Lyle admired Townes Van Zandt, looks up to Willie Nelson, and other progressive Texans. This is a prestige invite, and since he is not as political as we are, I can see why he is going.

No wingnut would have married Julia Roberts, no matter how ill-fated that was.

11. Newsmeat doesn't turn up any contributions, thank god
I'd cry if Lyle was a wingnut. I think he's too nice a man for that. (That's my illusion, and I'm stickng with it!)

He would probably say that Bush's money is as green as anyone else's, and that's good enough for him.

A friend of mine met him at a party once and said he was the funniest man she'd ever met. A real hoot. And his music is great, too (mostly).

The preacher asked her, and she said, I do
The preacher asked me, and she said, yes, he does, too
The preacher said, I pronounce you 99 to life
Son, she's no lady, she's your wife…

One of the most decent people I've ever met, in fact. And a helluva songwriter!

14. I'm glad he likes bushie's money
Because he'll never see another penny of mine. Or my husband's. Or my best friend's.

Somethings are unforgivable and inexcusable.
