If you are following a diet or about to start one - what is it?
Atkins was raging last New Years but we hear relatively little about carb counting now. Did it burn itself out? Is South Beach still hot? It is hard to tell (in the mercyful absence of wall-to-wall advertising).

Personally, I favor portion control (a focus on total calories) and a relatively high protein (30% of total calories) intake. I avoid soda, fried foods, trans-fats (Oreos, fritos, cheetos, french fries, margarine) and HFCS. But that doesn't have a name.

Any new diets?

1. Atkins!
I lost 105 pounds in 2 1/2 years, and am sticking with it.

I have a way to go, but I feel much better when I am avoiding sugars and starches.

2. A very old one. Calorie counting.
I have not done well in the past several weeks, but (miraculously?) I'm largely maintaining my recent loss of almost 20 lbs.

But ideally I want to consume no more than 1700 calories per day.

3. I do good old fashioned portion control.
I used to count calories religiously - almost to the point of obsessively measuring everything - but I am pretty good at eyeballing appropriate portion sizes now. I do about 25% protein, 55% carbohydrate, and 20% fat.

I eat what I like in moderation, and get lots of vegetables and whole grains. It's been sort of "party time" for my food intake over the holidays, but I'm already getting tired of overindulgence.

And I exercise every day, with the exception of an occasional Sunday.

4. I don't like the word diet
it implies a beginning and an end. There's no end to a successful 'diet'. More like a lifestyle change. I'm not a pro-Atkins, I believe it's harmful in the long run. Just do what you do, control your portions, they're too large here in the US.

7. Calorie counting... I have lost 40 lbs since May this way.
Portion control and better food choices has been the ONLY way to do it right! There's a website that helped - http://fitday.com. I calculated the caloric intake I'd need to maintain the weight I was at and I was HORRIFIED!! I set a caloric intake goal to lose and anally journaled for a couple weeks to "get the idea". Once I got it, I have been heading down since. BEST OF LUCK!

8. I use this one
It is non-internet (aside from the download). Really helped me figure out what foods were worth it calorie-wise.

And thanks!

You can have pretty much anything you desire, as long as you stay within your points for the day.

10. South Beach... for the most part
I lost 40 lbs on South Beach in just over 4 months. I am still working on it, but now I basically just use the info I learned from South Beach (what carbs are better or worse for you, for example) and combine it with what I learned from Tom Venuto's book, "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle."

Basically, I do a moderately high protein diet (30-40%), whole grain, unrefined carbs (30-40%) with lots of veggies and fruit.

And I work out 3-5 times a week. :-)

12. Portion Control
I've always eaten like a government mule without serious repercussion, but in recent years some excess pounds have accumulated. I believe I eat a balanced diet regarding carbohydrates, proteins & fats, so I don't envision as necessary anything drastic. Time for a little restraint!
