Grinch alert.

Personally I think I'd do the most good with my newfound holiday-annihilating powers by smacking down Valentine's Day. Tension and depression head south, folks relax.

How about you?

1. Easter, hands down
We're atheists, yet a bunny brings our children eggs filled with candy that they have to hunt for once a year.

Why does the bunny bring us eggs? Why is it not the Easter Chicken?

19. Easter = Pagan celebration of spring & fertility
What symbolizes fertility better than a bunny? :)

Spring Equinox = what you're talking about

40. Not quite.
Even the name "Easter" isn't Christian. It comes from the goddess Eostre. Christians stole/co-opted the Pagan holiday to convert the heathens.

2. christmas. just abolishing the christmas music alone would be a godsend.
really, really, really don't like this holiday anymore.

once upon a time i liked it, but not anymore. after a few years of retail i was cured.

before then... i'd probably say either st. valentine's day or ... perhaps st. patrick's day.

hmm, all of those holidays are saint related, hmm... you'd think it'd have something to do with me being raised catholic. dunno, perhaps it is the commercialism or the social pressure they induce to force people to celebrate them. dunno. but that's interesting. never really sat and thought about it before. fascinating relationship.

3. Any manufactured holiday.
Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, doesn't matter, any holiday created just for giving really stupid "gifts," including flowers.

All flowers do is wither and die.
They look better in the ground.

8. When I was a little Democrat, we used to get two days off in February
one for Lincoln's Birthday on February 12, and once for Washington's Birthday on February 22. Unfortunately, these days can fall on any day of the week, so after the big push for Monday holidays, the two holidays were merged in 1971.

Today's kids are cheated out of an extra day off. :-)

45. How can you say that?
Purim is the only (legitimate) holiday in Judaism where you're not miserable. Hanukkah doesn't really count because it's really all about Xmas Envy. I mean, Jewish kids need a break from all the neurosis and suffering, don't go all Ebeneezer on Purim!

7. I'd eliminate "Patriot Day." Or, if there had to be a "Patriot Day"
(and I'm not sure why...isn't Independence Day enough of an opportunity for posturing "patriotism"?)...I'd move it from September 11 to another date.

I don't want to see September 11 turn into another furniture sale, barbecue, shoot off fireworks day.

of course, you may know the hoLiday better as "marathon monday"

it's awesome because it's a hoLiday i currentLy have (most don't) and some usuaLLy throws a kick ass party on the marathon route (so it's ok to be Liquored up before noon - it's a hoLiday).

10. I'd have to say Christmas.
Not that I have anything against Christ (the original hippe liberal!), but the crass commercialism of his birthday makes me physically ill. I'd love to see Christmas return to being a simple religious holiday for the Christians. The rest of us could ignore the day completely!

12. Sweetest Day.
I think it used to be about orphans.

Now, it's about Valentine's Day Lite. I'd never even heard of it until I was in high school, on a pre-Homecoming Dance dinner date, and some guy tried to sell my date a rose to give to me in honor of this "holiday."

I still really don't know what the hell Sweetest Day is...

Both of those are a waste for me.

I don't like being "forced" to be romantic one day a year. It's stupid and puts too much pressure on a relationship.

IMHO..

20. we need more holidays - or, at least we should do it like the Chinese
In China, everybody gets like a week off for Chinese New Year (in January or February), and then another week for Labor Day & National Day (May 1 & Oct 1, I think)

How about a week around July 4 & around Thanksgiving?

We don't need a day off to celebrate a murderer.

I'd replace it with Gandhi Day. We should celebrate the date of the Mahatma's birth! October 2.

33. Yeah! What She Said!
The idea that we just don't close down industry (that which is "closeable" anyway, between Dec 24 and Jan 2 is silly. The economy would move along just fine without that week, and the winter enervation of the workers would be reduced significantly.

It'd be good for everyone.

34. I would never eliminate a holiday
And personally don't understand the bitterness against Valentine's Day. Why does it take away from single people if lovers and marrieds have one day out of the year -- and not even a whole day -- to celebrate their love?

35. Mainly because the marrieds and lovers spend all day asking us what we...
are doing. Then when we say nothing, we get the look of pity. I'm not against the holiday, but I hate the pity. It doesn't upset me to be alone on Valentine's Day otherwise.
