I Finally Picked Up My Eight Baby Corn Snakes!!! (Warning: Pics)
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 06:12 PM by Ladyhawk
I'm not sure what the deal was with locking my posts, so I will try not to bring personal issues into the forum anymore.

I took a trip to the Stockton Airborne Express (which was harder to find than a Christian Coalition member in a gay bar, by the way) and it really lifted my spirits. The package arrived with all eight baby corn snakes alive and in good condition. The breeder is Kathy Love, who literally wrote the book on corn snakes. She has a wonderful website called Cornutopia. If you like snakes at all, don't miss it!

My corn snakes won't get their full adult colors for awhile, so I am just starting to see what the babies will look like. Hints of orange are peeking through here and there. I can tell where the white will be on the (so-far) very pale albinos. All of them are nearly twice the size of Bijou, my yearling Louisiana milksnake. In a few months they'll surpass Bayou. The three Okeetees almost equal him in length already.

I have to leave them alone for three days, which is very hard. They're so cute with their little bandit masks and flickering tongues. They remind me a bit of our local gopher snakes, only not as robust. They're almost as streamlined as my Arizona Mt. kingsnakes at this early stage. Their tails are much longer in proportion to their bodies than those of the familiar local gopher snakes.

The breeder has a special agreement with the airlines about transporting live snakes, but doesn't want to alarm local Airborne Express employees. When asked a direct question, I have a very hard time lying, but I didn't want to renege on an agreement with the seller.

"What's in here?" asked the Airborne Express rep. She looked young and impressionable. The air holes were conspicuous. It probably didn't help that warnings were posted all over the box to keep it cool and out of direct sunlight. In one corner were the mystical words: "8 Elaphe guttata." That's the scientific nomenclature for corn snakes. Elaphe guttata! What a wonderful phrase. Elaphe guttata! Ain't no passing craze!

I looked at the box for clues on how best to lie my way through this. "Um...these are perishable...er, supplies."

OK, in a way that's true. The snakes are perishable. And they are supplies for my someday breeding colony. In the meantime, they'll make great pets...once they're over the stress of the move.

Can you imagine what the little buggers went through? Who knows how many planes they were loaded onto? When they arrived, they arrived pissed. I had to make sure they were OK, so I opened the lids to their little containers. Each one greeted me with a rattling tail. You'd rattle your tail, too, if someone had just air-mailed you across the country. During the inspection, the head would invariable poke out, the tongue would flicker, and a few times I received a nip for my troubles.

"Well, they're definitely alive," I remarked.

I'm the only person I know who thinks a pissed-off baby snake is cute. I smiled at each tail rattle and laughed at each bite. Of course, I didn't want to stress them more than was necessary, but I had to admire an animal that let it be known it wasn't happy...to a creature thousands of times its size! That takes chutzpah!

Once home, I tucked them safely into their terrariums. I will only look, not touch, for three days, then try a feeding. After that, I still won't bother them much for awhile. They've undergone a very traumatic experience. They don't need extra stress. But it's going go be HARD to leave them alone.

Did I mention they are very cute?

One thing I'm learning is that reptiles do everything slowly. I knew that already: head knowledge. But I'm also learning that they adapt to new environments more slowly than warm-blooded animals. It took my female kingsnake six weeks!!! She still isn't completely comfortable with her surroundings.

Because the corns are young, they should settle in a bit more rapidly, but I bet it takes at least two to three weeks.

(Note: I've renamed my Arizona Mt. Kingsnakes Aragorn and Arwen. The other names were bothering me for some reason.)

Now comes the hard part.

I need names. Lots of names. Eight names for eight corn snakes.

I have one male and two female Okeetees, which will hopefully look as nice as this one:

I have one male and two female albino (reverse) Okeetees, which will hopefully look as nice as these:

___________________________________

Originally, I was supposed to get a pair of hypos or rosies, but they refused to eat frozen / thawed mice and I really don't like to feed live if I can help it.

So I got a male crimson, which is from the Miami line. It should look something like this:

And a hypo female with ghost corn heritage, which will look something like this:

It will also have a recessive gene for type A anerythrism, I believe. I need to call Kathy and get the details. So far the crimson looks orange and the hypo looks red...weird. :D

Did I mention I need names? Eight of them.

4. Oh, and
One came as a baby from Fedex from Ohio to California. I guess I didn't know I was supposed to leave him alone for three days. I played with him the next day. He's fine.

They're such great snakes. Don't be afraid to handle them and play with them. My two spend time with me every day, usually watching the news. They also love to watch football. I think it's the colorful little men running around. I even have them paper trained.

I adore my snakes...I have a Carolina corn (normal) and a ghost corn.

0.1 Carolina corn -- Sheikh Yerbouti
1.0 Ghost corn -- Casper

10. I really like the look of the ghost corns.
I'm thinking about getting some of them, next. Casper is a great name. I'm not familiar with a Carolina corn. Is it a normal from Carolina? I think the Okeetee is named for a region in the Carolinas where there are especially nice corn snakes. Kathy Love and others have taken these specimens and refined the line so it is even more beautiful. I'm pretty sure Okeetees are from one of the Carolinas. Gorgeous.

Kathy Love recommends I be careful about stress, so I plan to be. I've misted their enclosures once a day because:

1. I bet the trip dehydrated them.
2. It's more humid in the states where corn snakes originate. California is usually dry.

Now you've got me thinking about ghost corns. :)

I also like the Miamis. My crimson is a hypomelanistic Miami, really. He was probably bred out to hypos, then back to Miamis.

There are THOUSANDS of corn snake morphs. Choosing is hard. I have a lot of orangies and reds. It's probably time for a ghost. Those are so beautiful.

11. Mulch bowl
A nice thing in dry climates is giving your snake a mulch bowl. Get a tupperware type bowl and cut a snake-sized hole in the top. Then, keep moist (not wet) moss, such as New Zealand sphagnum, in there. They love it, and it helps them shed.

20. Remember
If red touches black, your OK, Jack, If red touches yellow, you are a dead fellow. remmeber that when looking for snakes, it may save you from being bitten, and if you are bitten keep the snake around so they can make the anti-venom.

3. You must name a female Selu
Selu is the Cherokee maize goddess who gave Native Americans the gift of maize in Cherokee mythology.

So Selu for a girl. Let me think of other corn deities in Indian mythology and I will post again later.

Congrats on the babies...I saw a baby corn snake last week in a pet store...it was beautiful, and I am NOT a snake person!

7. Oh I like that name!!!
I was thinking of "maize" because of the color resemblance between "maize" and corn snakes, but didn't like the name "maize."

PERFECT!!!

I think this one will do well for one of the female Okeetees.

Thank you!!!!

My friend had to give hers to the local Herpitological Society when she left for college. It was so beautiful! I would be pissed, too, if I was airshipped anywhere. I'm sure they'll be lovely pets. Great pics.

14. there was a children's book with a female cornsnake in it ...
I think it was called "Hemi" (the story of a mule who embarks on a dangerous cross-country trek -- the corn snake is one of the characters he meets along the way). I forget the snake's name, though.

I used to take care of a little milk snake at the nature interpretive centre where I worked ... she liked me because I would bring her live slugs (her favourite!) and would come out from under her log when I was around. She wasn't nearly as colourful as your beauties, though ...

15. How about naming them after 8 of the 10 democratic candidates
Kerry, Dean, Clark, Edwards, Gephardt, Graham, Sharpton, Kucinich.

I skipped Lieberman although sometimes he can be a snake, you wouldn't want to give your pet that name.

I also skipped Mosely-Braun - too complicated of a name, but if you like it you could subsitute it for one of the other candidates you don't like.

24. Hehehehehehe
Those are horse names. I could mention a few of the differences between horses and snakes, but I think you get the picture.

I get the picture. Actually I love the picture...and I love that tune.

Although...Epitaph would be a great name for a black mamba. But Ladyhawk don't do no venomous snakes. I have a history of being bitten by the non-venomous ones. Back when I was a teenager, I had to go to the doctor to get snake teeth removed from my thumb. And snakes are great escape artists. It seems like they were always getting loose and I was always using my pet rat as bait to attract them into the open while I watched TV.

Gee, I was bitten a lot and my snakes were always escaping. I wonder if I should own venomous snakes? :D

If I were to get venomous snakes, I'd want these. These have to be the coolest-looking snakes I've ever seen:

They're variable bush vipers from the Congo. Colorful little packages of death. You'd need at least three color forms, of course.

18. Oh, LadyHawk, your baby snakes will be
beautiful and so appropriate to the season! Fall is my favorite season, what's yours? I love the crisp, cool air, warm sun, and best of all, my sweaters can come back out of their chest.

How about naming one Ceduceus:
URL citation for paragraph below: http://in.geocities.com/msrmc/index.html

Recognized internationally as the symbol of Medicine, the"Caduceus" reached symbolism of healing the body, mind and soul. Historically carried by Mercury, wing-footed messenger of the gods (also Roman soldiers during flag of truce). The staff of peace was once borne by Roman military emissaries to signify a cessation of hostilities. Snakes from tradition that Sesculapius, the Roman God of Medicine appeared during a plague in Rome in the form of a snake. Ancients believed snakes discovered the secret of eternal life, interpreting shedding of skin as a return to youth. They also credited snakes with being able to search out health-giving medicinal herbs.

Thus, the combination of snakes as symbols of health and the staff representing both speed and peace.

DUs hopeful prayer for all, especially for you!
Good luck with the very wise new babies!

May your breeding program be a wildly successful venture. Think of all the baby snakes you will be able to handle and perhaps spoil rotten. That should be lots of fun.

I suppose Slim is a bit too mundane for a name for one of your new friends... :-)

29. They are just beautiful. I can't get over the colors
I know that you are very proud of them, and with good reason. I have furry pets, so would have no idea how to care for a snake. What do they eat? Do they know you? I am truly curious. I have had turtles, but never a snake.

I don't know if you saw another post I made about my grandmother and a corn snake. I took her to a nature center and she was quite taken with the corn snake. It may have been because the man in charge of the reptiles was so friendly to her and let her hold the snake, but she really enjoyed the experience. At this great place you can donate and sponsor the animals. I adopted the corn snake, her favorite, in my grandmother's name, so she was officially listed as the ``parent,'' and invited to special ``parent'' functions. She got such a kick out of this that I did too.:D

I "babysat" for a Florida King snake years ago & found him to be a very sweet animal. If people just gave themselves a chance to be with them they might be nicely surprised by what nice pets they can be.
