Hundreds of animals perish in pet shop fire in West Islip

12/18/04) WEST ISLIP - Hundreds of animals perished in a fire at the BTJ’s Jungle Pet Shop in West Islip on Saturday. Firefighters say the store quickly became an inferno.

According to fire officials, they battled the blaze from inside the building first, but the situation rapidly deteriorated and the firefighters had to fight the fire from outside of the building..

BTJ’s Jungle Pet Shop has been in West Islip since 1969 and sold every type of animal. Employees of the pet store say they had more animals than usual in the shop because of the holidays. They say only three animals survived, two ducks and a turkey that lived in the backyard of the store.

Officials say one firefighter sustained minor injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

on edit: It looks like the story you're referring to is the pet shop fire :(. That is very sad, and here's a link everyone can get to:

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/state/ny-bc-ny--petshopfire1218dec18,0,7259764.story?coll=ny-region-apnewyork

John Niehoff, who owns the store with his two brothers, Bill and Tom, estimated that 25 dogs and half a dozen cats, 20 hamsters, 20 guinea pigs, 20 rabbits and at least 1,000 fish died in the blaze, along with a menagerie of exotic animals, including a Siamese turtle and an alligator.

9. OMG, how awful!
This animal lover HATES to hear of things like this. I hope they didn't suffer too much. Reminds me of the kennel fire we had in my area a few years ago, all of the dogs died before it could be put out.
