Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 07:23 AM by VermontDem2004
"When you move to New England, you put your old loyalties behind you," said Dean campaign co-chairman Steve Grossman, a Massachusetts businessman. "You've got to have a sense of humor about this."

Yes it is kind of flip-flop but look at this.

Dean told the Boston Herald that the Yankees accusation was the "biggest insult" hurled at him so far. He says Roger Clemens' beaning of Mets catcher Mike Piazza in 2000 was the final straw.

But all that doesn't count, as of right now Howard Dean is a Red Sox fan.

17. that was such a great thing
I was watching (in spite of myself) in the bottom of the ninth, and I commented to my housemate how amazing it was that noone was leaving. And then, sho nuff, Walker put that one out, and Ortiz followed in the 10th. That guy is gold in the clutch. On to Oakland, anyone know the dates that they come back to Fenway for that series? Go Sox!

19. Gee, just a week ago, you SUX fans
were raving about winning the division. Now you're simply talking wild card. My, how things change in a week.

As usual, the Yankees win the division for the SIXTH time in a row. Meanwhile, the SUX have yet to clinch a berth. I wouldn't be singing the praises of that long-hapless team just yet.

21. Oh, give it a rest
That is the WEAKEST argument you guys have. And it's the ONLY one. Name me one team that DOESN'T try to get the best players for their money. It's not the Yanks fault they're in the No. 1 media market. If the SUX were in the No. 1 market, THEY would pay top dollar, too.

Think of something better.

Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 12:23 PM by dymaxia
Oh, "The Sux" - gee, that's so original. In fact, it's so original that it's (concidentally?) used against TWO teams.

My beef with you guys is that there are too damn many of you. It would be fine if you weren't crawling like ants in every city in America.

Time for you to all be spayed and neutered. Can't you be more original in your choice of teams?

Please god, let the Red Sox get the job done this time. You got one fan here in the Midwest. Hell, given the wild unpopularity of the Yankees, you've got millions! Oh, and BTW - the person to whom you replied is not in Boston. Are you that ignorant about the tens and tens of millions who want you to lose?

28. You're just mad because you know it's true
It doesn't have to be original; just fitting. And it fits them like a glove.

As for having me castrated (the proper term for humans), well, that's a bit overboard. You might want to limit your invective towards the team, not me personally. But it's typical SUX fan class; almost as classy as throwing bottles on the field during the '99 ALCS.

So, don't take it out on me. You want to bash the Yanks, by all means do. Keep me out of it.

46. sorry
I have nothing against the team - I'm happy that they're so handsomely paid. My grandfather was a ballplayer so I tend to not take things out on players.

If you're a lifelong fan, you will be spared. Especially if you stay in New York where you belong. I was talking about the Yankee fans who live in my town and take good jobs away from the natives - the Yankee fans who have been living in another market for more than a few years....or the ones who don't have a hometown team who pick the Yankees out of laziness.

Last time I checked, I could move wherever I wanted. It's still Amercia, no matter who's in charge.

But thank you so much for offering to spare me. I don't know what I would've done without a pardon from Herr Dymaxia.

And what do Yankee fans have to do with taking people's jobs? I don't understand that part.

Several people doubt your theory. Do you think the sputtering Oakland Offense want to Face Boston's Starting pitching?

A playoff birth is a playoff birth, Division winners and Wild Card entrants play the same # of games to win it all.

Sneak into the playoffs, Looks like they will have it locked up a day after the yanks did, hardly a backdoor.

because I dont support your baseball team. Maybe you need a wider world view there buddy. Its only a game.

And yes they did sneak into the playoffs....only a Red Sox fan crows about "locking up" a wild card berth and compares it to a division championship. But I guess championship is a hard concept for Red Sucks fans to get thier minds around.

LOL...how about Oaklands starting pitching? Do you know anything about baseball at all? The Oakland O may be sputtering, but I doubt anyone would pick Bostons starting pitchers over the As big 3 (now 2 because Mulder is out)

I would take Pedro Lowe and Wakefield against anyone right now. big three is big 2, big difference.

67. Now that you mention it...
Here's what happened, in case you forgot...

October 25, 1986: Two days earlier, Boston beat Dwight Gooden for the second time; they led the Series three games to two. The Red Sox young ace, Roger Clemens, was on the mound for game six. The bullpen was well rested after Bruce Hurst had gone the distance in game five. In the top of the first, Wade Boggs led off with a single and was driven in on a Dwight Evans double. In the second, three singles brought Spike Owen home; Boston led 2-0. Clemens did not allow a hit through four, and carried the 2-0 lead into the fifth inning. The Mets' Darryl Strawberry walked and stole second. Ray Knight's single brought him home. Knight took third when Dwight Evans misplayed a Mookie Wilson single. Danny Heep hit into a double play, but Knight scored to tie the game. Boston's Marty Barrett took back the lead on an Evans sacrifice in the seventh. Jim Rice was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. In the top of the eighth, Dave Henderson singled and Spike Owen bunted him to second. Mike Greenwell pinch-hit for Clemens (who had a blister), striking out. Wade Boggs and Marty Barrett both walked; Boston had two outs and the bases loaded (still up by one run). The Mets brought in lefty Jesse Orosco to face Bill Buckner. John McNamara decided to leave the left-handed Buckner in the game, instead of pinch-hitting Don Baylor. After flying out to end the inning, Buckner (who was often removed for defensive purposes late in the game) took his position at first. Lee Mazzilli tied it up on a Gary Carter sac fly off of Calvin Schiraldi. Knotted at three, the game went into extra innings. Henderson led off the tenth with a homerun for Boston. Later in the inning Boggs doubled, and Barrett drove him in. Boston had a 5-3 lead. Wally Backman hit a fly to left for the Mets first out in the bottom of the tenth. Keith Hernandez followed with a deep fly to center for the second out. With nobody on and two outs, the Shea Stadium scoreboard read "Congratulations Boston Red Sox, 1986 World Champions." Boston pitcher Bruce Hurst was selected as the World Series MVP. Gary Carter hit a single to left and pinch-hitter Kevin Mitchell lined to center; Carter was on second. Ray Knight faced Calvin Schiraldi. Schiraldi got ahead with a 0-2 count; Boston was one strike away from winning. On the next pitch, Knight blooped the ball into short center; Carter scored and Mitchell advanced to third. The Mets were down by one, 5-4. Bob Stanley replaced Calvin Schiraldi to face Mookie Wilson. The count went to 2-2; Boston was again one strike away. Wilson fouled off two balls; for the fourth time, the Red Sox were one strike away from breaking the curse. Stanley's next pitch bounced off of Catcher Rich Gedman, allowing Mitchell to score the tying run. Knight advanced to second base. Wilson hit a slow grounder towards first. The ball rolled under Bill Buckner's glove into short right as Knight rounded third to score the winning run. Boston stranded fourteen runners in the game. McNamara later said that he had left Buckner in the game so that he would be on the field when the team won the World Series.

Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 01:03 PM by MaineDem
I suppose I should be offended but what the heck, I'll accept it. It's so easy to be a Yankees fan. Takes no effort at all.

The Red Sox nation is made up of loyal followers who have been with the team in good times and, more commonly, bad. I personally thought the Division title would go to the Yanks but while the possibility was there I always thought there was hope. See, Sox fans don't give up.

We don't have the Wild Card yet but it's looking good. And if the Sox blow it there's the almost-yearly chant of "wait til next year." That's what fans do.

You think you've got the market on loyalty? O, the conceit! I've been a fan my whole life. Which means I suffered through the entire 80's and first half of the 90's without so much as a playoff bid. Don't talk to me about hard times, because the Yanks have had PLENTY of tough times. Yeah, they win now. So what? That's what GOOD teams do. Of course, there will be tough times ahead. And guess what? I'll still be a fan. Your loyalty to your team is no greater than mine.

We'll see about the wild card. It looks good for them, but who knows which way the winds of fate will blow for your team in its final games.

38. Dear Yankee fan,
You don't know jack about tough times. PS - you forgot 1965-76 but I doubt you were born yet. Ah, the mind of the garden variety bandwagoning Yankee fan....

Signed,

Chicago baseball fans everywhere

42. Bandwagon? WTF?
Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 01:58 PM by manco
Oh, you poor, misinformed and presumptuous grrl. Did you not read my post? I've been a fan my whole life. Where do you get bandwagon out of that? I've haven't a clue.

But you're right, I didn't experience 65-76 because I wasn't born until '72 (too young to know what was going on in 72-76.) So, I can't rightly say that I suffered tough times with my team, because I didn't. The '79-95 years are a different story.

But it is odd that you would chant "Go A's" in one post, but sign another "Chicago baseball" fan. So, you flip-flop from Chicago to Oakland depending on who's doing better that year? My, what WILL you do this year? Who to choose?

Talk about bandwagons.

26. Dude, the Twins are gonna play the A's. BoSox will play the Yanks.
As long as they didn't switch around the "1 plays 4, 2 plays 3" pairings. Yanks are in 1st in the league. BoSox would have the fourth seed (wild card), meaning they would have to play NY in the ALDS.

30. This is what I thought ...
But I checkout Sportsline (I think), and if the playoffs were to start today, the BoSux would play the A's in Oakland.

Cheers

79. I still love those boys...
The Red Sox killed my grandfather in the late '70's. He died in Aug. because he couldn't hold on for another year...But I still love those Sox. (BTW he was 93)
