My grand daughter was radiant in her black gown, her wrist corsage. For a few minutes the center of attention in the group of early arrivers. Without shame or embarrassment she pushed me in my wheel chair to our place in the auditorium. I was able to stay in my chair. One of the kind officials of the event provided my grand daughter with a chair so she could sit beside me.
All of the plush seats, a thousand of them I am told, are bright red. In the rear of the stage the massive pipes of the organ rise high to the ceiling. They are silver and some are wood.
A few musicians are on stage, informal. The two E flat horns are warming up. I recognize Mozart, Sinfonia Concertante, K364, the main event of the evening. Slowqly the stage fills up. The musicians slowly take their places. Two base viles, four cello, three timpanni, one large base drum, two flutes, two bassoons, two clarinets, English horn in F, two horns, twelve violins.
The orchestra runs through Sibeelius, Kuolema Op.44.: Pelleas et melisande, Op46. Followed by a Viola solo Partos, Yizkor.
Then comes Mozart..
A fascinating evening of music. To bad one must leave the music there in the empty auditorium. Oughta be a way to take it home!
My grand daughter says thank you Grampa many times during the evening. She is planning the next concert!
