Sometimes I just love being Canadian
The CBC has been running a program/contest for the last few months called The Greatest Canadian. Last night was the final push for all of the advocates to make their case. Each candidate also had other various supporters in the audience.

I loved seeing scholars, politicians, historians, scientists, journalists, Olympians and artists debating who best demonstrated leadership, genius, passion and legacy. At times it was raucous and heated. It reminded me of Parliament.

We have a Canadian Idol show, but The Greatest Canadian. created much more buzz. That just makes me glad.

and we pick up the Canadian stations... I cant believe how much better the singers are on Canadian Idol. I mean its not even close, when my sister and bro in law came up from FLA last summer they caught a couple of episodes and insisted we record the rest of the season for them. Now we have like 15 family members the tapes get passed around to, and those are diehard American Idol fans (they are republicans, go figure). Ya'all screwed up by letting Jenny Gear go that early in the first season though.... okay Ill stop now, I just Love ya Canada!

on edit: whilst my grammar and spelling are still horrible its better than it was.

6. He was a candidate - he wasn't there
In my opinion, he shouldn't have been on the list. I enjoy coaches corner as much as the next person, but c'mon.

My top 5 are as follows:

Tommy Douglas - Universal Medicare to start with. His imprint is seen on many of the values that Canadians hold dear.

Dr. Banting - Insulin. How many lives has he saved.

Alexander Graham Bell - He invented mass communications. His inventions transformed the world. He was also a humanitarian.

Lester B. Pearson - He managed to implement many sweeping changes with minority governments. Nobel Peace Prize.

Terry Fox - Probably the most beloved Canadian. He ran a marathon a day for 4 months with only one leg until cancer stopped him. He raised millions for cancer research. In a few short months he went from being a kid with a big idea to the recipient of the nations highest honour. His funeral was televised nationally.

7. that's one thing about Bush -- he makes me proud to be Canadian
I was at a talk given by a Massey Lectures author last night (archaeologist Ronald Wright) and he slammed Bush's policies. Earlier in the day I bought a T-shirt from a blue-collar guy who makes ends meet by doing silkscreen orders, and HE was upset about Bush too. And this morning, one of my students said that she saw Bush photos and "support our leader" banners during a trip to the States and it really creeped her out. When people with such different backgrounds are critical about Bush and aren't afraid to say so, that's pretty cool.

10. ah, that type of show was done in most European countries too.
AFAIK it was an British idea copied by pretty much all public broadcasting stations.
The Dutch embarrassed themselves by voting for Fortuyn, most other incarnations of that show went without major surprises.

11. Greatest American
What would The Greatest American be like? I think it would be tainted from the beginning, because the corporate media would be afraid to paint anyone without a military or political record as possibly being great.

I'm yet another Canadian wanna-be.

12. Ugh
The Greatest American would probably end up being * in the corporate ran television bonanza. Instead of someone who actually deserves it.

Yeah. Canada is rocking right now.

I've voted for all of my top 5.

Tommy Douglas got the most. Terry Fox was a sentimental favourite though. You may have been able to tell that.
