it's too damn smarmy for me-just thought i'd say that. i'm stuck watching films today-it's freezing out

his stuff also, in my opinion, borders on racist and is downright sexist

2. What writing style? All of his characters cuss like there's no tomorrow
Not to forget that when they don't cuss, they beat, stab, or shoot the living daylights out of some weirdo.

3. Agreed
Tarantino is THE most overrated director in Hollywood. He is a hack who had some good ideas in 'Pulp Fiction'. Even in PF, he ruins it by placing himself in the movie. His acting is terrible and cliche. I can't believe anyone takes him seriously.

5. His acting in PF was TERRIBLE.
And I like the guy. I don't know if he was playing the guy as an extreme asshole, or if he just couldn't act. Haven't had the opportunity to see which.

4. I'm a black woman and I love Tarantino.
I do think in spots he tends to write dialogue that is hokey... I think he's more of an idea man and would benefit from some tweaking in that area. But I love love love his films. They're a lot of fun and have a unique quality about them in spite of his using things from older films.

As for the writing, I feel that way about 90% of writer/directors. I think that M. Night Shyamalan is a terrific director but is the hackiest crappiest writer in the world. Also I think he's got a huge ego, with the Hitchcockian "How can I put myself in every one of my movies" thing.

6. I like Tarantino
I'm an aspiring screenwriter who has one screeplay floating around Hollywood and I'm starting another one. I like Tarantino cause he refuses to adapt to the formulatic-type screenwriting that affects most movies coming out of Hollywood.

But I must add, if you smoke a little weed before watching his movies can make a world of difference.

7. Nice to know I'm not alone
I've tried to like his stuff but I find it all terribly pretentious. It's like he's beating you over the head with the movie so you'll ooh and ahh and say, "wow, what a genius". Doesn't work for me.

And for the poster who suggested a smoke first, believe me, that's SOP for me. It just made it easier for me to get sidetracked to something else.

8. Writing style? He's as much a writer as P Diddy is a composer
a perfect example of the poverty of postmodernism

9. I tended to agree
but then I saw Kill Bill I and II. Aspects of these films are quite beautiful. I do tai chi and have some interest in martial arts films, otherwise, I would never have seen them. Although I think his love of gratuitous violence is really over the top, he has done some homework in the area of film history. There are some great "quotes" of past films/ film styles and sometimes his offbeat sense of humor is rather compelling. Plus you have to remember he spent his formative years sitting in theaters watching endless 70s exploitation and Kung-Fu flicks.
