9. True story

My brother and I had our stepfather's old record player (the kind you could latch the lid onto and take to your friends house!). We also had his entire record collection. So we were a little 5 and 7 year old singing songs like "Dead Puppies" and "The Only Gay Eskimo" and "Fish Heads" (one of our favorites).

We also loved Tom T. Hall (one of his hits was titled "I Like Beer") and we heard all the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones on our stepdad's old record player. It even had one of those conversion thingies so you could play 45s and we had all his 45s.

Rainy days when we couldn't play outside we would literally stay in my brother's Star Wars-festooned room and dance to records all day, coming out only for a fried bologna sandwich on white.

I had one of those phonograph player (the speakers fit over the top to form the lid.) I still have my old 45's that I play from time to time. I plan to play them more now, to remind me when America was still sane and recognizible.
