1. Who is Shelley Long?
sorry to be stupid and not know. I'm sorry for her, and for whatever circumstances drove her to this desperate act.

4. Wow. And to think she played Carol Brady in the Brady Bunch movies...
Man, this is rough. She's cool. Suicide isn't. I wonder what pushed her to the edge (none of us knows).

6. Depression after split from husband of 23 years

Former 'Cheers' actress Shelley Long has been hospitalised after a suspected drug overdose.

Sources claim the blonde star, who played barmaid Diane in the long-running sitcom, may have attempted suicide after splitting from her husband, Bruce Tyson, after 23 years together.

A friend is quoted by Britain's The Sun newspaper as saying: "For 18 months she's been getting more and more depressed. It's like seeing someone falling off a cliff.

She told some of her friends she felt she had nothing to live for."

12. She needs to stay in the hospital for a while on the psych ward
I don't know what kind of doctor would let somebody out of his/her care so soon after a suicide attempt.

30. Evidently not...
The news guy is apparently reading a wire-service story of an incident which happened last week, and reporting it as if it just happened.

13. What a shame!!! She's a very good comedic actress and I
also saw a movie on TV where she did some dramatic stuff, too. Very gifted, but a long marriage breaking up on top of a stagnant career (can't get old in H-wood) and the holidays...makes for a pretty stressful set of circumstances....

Hope she pull through....

lOS ANGELES - The New York Post is reporting actress Shelley Long was taken to UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles apparently after taking an overdose of painkillers.

Long was apparently depressed over the breakup of her marriage. She was admitted to the hospital on November 16th and was discharged Tuesday.

Long had been married to securities broker Bruce Tyson for 22 years. They are in the midst of a divorce. Her friends say she had been sad in recent months because of the split.

Long is best known for the role she played as the bubbly blond waitress in "Cheers.". She has also starred in several movies in the past 20 years. Among her film credits: "The Money Pit", "The Brady Bunch Movie", "The Santa Trap" and "Dr. T & the Women."

29. That's actually a repost...
...of a news item posted here last night, omitting the rather important paragraph that mentions this took place about a week ago. The "suicide attempt" storyline appears to be a tabloid invention -- how close to reality or not is unknown, except that her agent is claiming it was merely a bad reaction to medicine.

'Cheers' Alum Long Briefly Hospitalized

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- "Cheers" alum Shelley Long was back home after being briefly hospitalized because she took a dose of medication to treat back pain and the drug made her ill, her manager said Friday.

"Shelley took an extra pain pill for her back, which she hurt when she fell on the set of `Cheers' many years ago," Martin Mickelson told The Associated Press. "She had a reaction to it ... but she is now home and she is fine."

The actress, who played the prim and neurotic Diane Chambers on the hit 1980s sitcom, was treated overnight sometime within the last two weeks at the University of California, Los Angeles, Medical Center, Mickelson said.

"She had a nice Thanksgiving," he added.

25. The invasive media is what I find to be the saddest part of this story.
To have such an incident broadcast nationwide is a further assault on her, aside from what she is already dealing with.

27. I kinda feel that way too
although that it may be good to call attention to the effects of serious depression (so much more common than many people believe), but it is doubtful the press will present it that way - they'll sensationalize it, just like everything else.

Terrible jokes aside, I wish her the best of luck. She is obviously in a lot of emotional pain.
