I just ruined a gallon of split pea soup that I was making. Damn!
I had been cooking it for an hour when I remembered a smoked ham hock that I had in the freezer. I pulled the ham hock out and threw it in the soup pot. Now, thirty minutes later, the delightful smells of bay and onions and peas that I had been enjoying have been replaced with a nauseating heavy odor. Seems the ham hock is rancid. Nothing to do now but let the soup cool and throw it out. Fortunately, I have another bag of split peas and all the ingredients for another pot of soup. Meatless, this time.

6. Actually, I have some good smoked sausage.
It is the same garlic pork sausage that I use in my gumbo (that everyone raves about). That will be good in split pea soup.

Are you sure my husband hasn't been at your house stocking your freezer? LOL (He has a habit of freezing things that are "iffy") Believe me, I feel your pain because I have been there a few times!

5. made a lovely lentil soup with kielbasa yesterday
it was gray rainy weather good!

But I left the burner on low through dinner and it scorched the bottom of the pan and so there are no leftovers; there's no flavor in the world quite like scorched beans. Yuck!
