Will "Intolerable Cruelty" be The Coen Brothers first bad movie?
The previews look, well, shitty, and that's me being charitable. Maybe it's just because Catherine Zeta Jones bugs the shit out of me, or the weird way Clooney talks in it, but it just doesn't look like it could be any good. I really hope the rom-com angle is just a marketing ploy and it's really another deliciously dark comedy, but I have a bad feeling that this will be the Coen Brothers first loser after a career of gems.

1. It's the first one they didn't write from scratch.
They got a script from someone else and apparently re-did it. For what it's worth...so maybe you're right.

Clooney was acting stagey in "O Brother Where Art Thou" and the movie still was great.

2. Yeah, but without the accent, the stagey acting is annoying
And I'm guessing he won't be saying "Damn! We're in a tight spot!" a lot like in O Brother. I loved that bit.

3. My favorite was the hair tonic argument...
The bit about whether "Fop" was as good as the other brand. he was so incensed at the mere suggestion; it was hilarious.

4. "I don't want Fop, dammit, I'm a Dapper Dan man!"
Yeah, that was great. That's one of only three movies I've actually thoroughly enjoyed Clooney in. The others were Ocean's Eleven and Out Of Sight. Incidentally, Out Of Sight was the only time I've ever seen Jennifer Lopez in any medium where I didn't want to shoot the screen. She wasn't good or anything, but she was at least tolerable.

5. Maybe the second one...
I didn't think "The Hudsucker Proxy" was all that great.

I get the same bad vibe on this one. There is a a billboard in Venice advertising it now, and it just doesn't look right.

14. I'm with you, Monica, I LOVED Hudsucker
Ok, except for Jennifer Jason Leigh, who was HORRIBLY miscast as the Rosalyn Russell character. But, other than that, I just loved that movie to pieces. I'm glad I didn't see any of the previews as it allowed me to be surprised at Tim Robbin's character's invention.

One fave moment: when Tim showed Paul Newman the drawing of his invention, and it was a circle on the piece of paper. Then when Paul looked confused, Tim looked at it, TURNED IT UPSIDE DOWN (a CIRCLE!), and reshowed it to him. lol! Man, that was classic!

"You know, for kids!"
"Yeah yeah, sure sure ..."

8. Watch it again sometime
It's not up there with The Man Who Wasn't There or The Big Lebowski, but it's still a damn good movie. I like it better than Barton Fink and Raising Arizona, actually.

Here's my ranking (I have a list making problem):

1. O Brother Where Art Thou?
2. Fargo
3. Miller's Crossing
4. The Man Who Wasn't There
5. The Big Lebowski
6. Hudsucker Proxy
7. Barton Fink
8. Raising Arizona
9. Blood Simple

It's really hard to rank them though, because I love them all. I only ranked Raising Arizona as low as I did because I really hate Nic Cage.

7. It does look a bit shite
from the previews...serious bummer. But I guess I can overlook one crappy film after all the great ones they've given us, including my very all time fave Raising Arizona. ;)

9. I hated Bart And Fink, but I'm the only North Dakotan who loved "Fargo".
All the other folks I know and grew up with HATED "Fargo", cause they thought it pushed negative stereotypes on us. HELLO??!!! THAT'S HOW WE REALLY ACT AND TALK!!!!

BTW, The Coen Brothers went to my alma mater, St. Louis Park High School.

I love everything else by them, but that wretched thing was just a stupid, pretentious student film

16. I agree
And I didn't think much of "The Man Who Wasn't There", either. Yet, they made "Hudsucker", "Fargo", and "O Brother...", so all is forgiven.

"O Brother What A Shitty Film Art Thou"

Once you've lived with REAL bluegrass-loving idiots who act like the leads in "Oh Brother", who also happen to vote GOP and listen to Falwell, then maybe you'd understand why that film does nothing for me but bring up bad memories.

GODS! I HATE THAT FILM!

19. Wow. That's a pretty sweeping statement!
It's sad that your past experience has robbed you of the enjoyment of, what is in my opinion, a great film. Not the greatest film ever made--far from it--but a great film nonetheless.

20. Well, Khephra's right
if you live here, OBWAT cuts very close to the bone. I enjoy it, but it does make me wince in places.

21. I know it's sweeping, but so was the "Bluegrass culture is great!"
BS that swept through left-leaning circles after the movie came out.

I spent several of my childhood years growing up by a creek and listening to Bluegrass at Pink Floyd levels...

...and I can tell you that many of those "Oh Brother" characters, if placed into a real world context, wouldn't be quite so "charming" to Lefties, but would instead be called "Freepers".

Oh yeah, there are Leftie BG people...no doubt about it...just that my experiences with that crowd helped make me the dedicated Leftist that I am today. I think a lot of it had to do with the anti-intellectualism, pro-authority, and anti-city bs I saw from the group of BG fans that I grew up around.
