Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile...and
while you're on the way...just "Don't Worry, Be Happy."

How many other "Smile Through Your Tears" songs are out there? Anyone else know any "chipper/cheerful" ditties to keep us going...smiling through out tears and pluggin along? I, having Southern Heritage think of our African-American Spirituals as song: "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" and "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and others...but they are too religious for DU..

I'm looking for upbeat songs of smiling through troubles. Blues is always good because "Blues Folks" are always down...but "Smiling through Tears" is very limited...not many songs about that I would think...but then..maybe there are?

Heres the snip from that old WWI war of blight like Iraq..that I'm passing along with a link. Who here can identify with WWI? Just read about it..and think about Iraq...whatever..it's dated..

I post this for our soldiers in Iraq...who do not know what they are dying for just like the Brits didn't in WWI...and it repeats and comes round again. Our soldiers have no music that we know of. The only war that doesn't have a sound.....or maybe we just don't know the sound yet of what they have had to live through...
------------------------

Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
and smile, smile, smile!

Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
and smile, smile, smile!
While you´ve got a lucifer to light your fag
Smile, boys, that´s the style!
What´s the use worrying?
It never was worth while
So, pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
and smile, smile, smile!

2. Smile
Artist: Nat King Cole

Words by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons and Music by Charlie Chaplin

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

You've both got your style

And not from head to toe that matters!

So, Janitor,

6. Keep on the sunny side,
always on the sunny side
Keep on the sunny side of life
It will help us every day
It will brighten all the way
If we keep on the sunny side of life

and, of course:

Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad,
Other things just make you swear and curse,
When you're chewing life's gristle,
Don't grumble,
Give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
Always look on the light side of life.

If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten,
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps.
Just purse your lips and whistle.
That's the thing.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
Always look on the right side of life,
For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin.
Give the audience a grin.
Enjoy it. It's your last chance, anyhow.
So,...

Always look on the bright side of death,
Just before you draw your terminal breath.

Life's a piece of shit,
When you look at it.
Life's a laugh and death's a joke it's true.
You'll see it's all a show.
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
Always look on the right side of life.

Always look on the bright side of life!
Always look on the bright side of life!
Always look on the bright side of life!
Always look on the bright side of life!
Always look on the bright side of life!

7. Part of the Plan by Dan Fogelberg
(It doesn't say anything about smiling but I think it fits)

I have these moments
All steady and strong
I'm feeling so holy and humble
The next thing I know
I'm all worried and weak
And I feel myself
Starting to crumble.
The meanings get lost
And the teachings get tossed
And you don't know what you're
Going to do next.
You wait for the sun
But it never quite comes
Some kind of message comes
Through to you.
Some kind of message comes through.
And it says to you...

Love when you can
Cry when you have to...
Be who you must
That's a part of the plan
Await your arrival
With simple survival
And one day we'll all understand...

9. I was a huge Fogelberg fan, too.
I saw him in concert three times and have all his earlier albums. I think he is still putting out albums occasionally but on a private label. I haven't heard any of his recent stuff. I think the last one I bought was about ten years ago and I didn't like it. Same thing with Jackson Browne after "Lawyers in Love".

10. I have my grandfather's WWI helmet and his diary... it's in CODE!
And my dad used to sing that song... all the time.
I love having memories of it.
And I adored both my grandfather and my father -- two good men!

WWI was probably the stupidest war ever fought.
Although this Iraq quagmire is right up there in the top 3 -- alone with Vietnam.

Oi the pain.

You'd think the world would figure this out?
It's the gd 21st Century already yet.

11. I know. WWI was really bloody and useless from what I read...different
from Vietnam in a way but still a useless loss of young men in huge numbers.

We never learn...never. That's interesting about you Granfather's diary.. I still like having those things around from my relatives.

Sad history though, but I guess when they were young they thought they were honored serving their country just like those in Iraq think so.

Who knows...useless war.
