What's the commercial you hate the most?
Despite the disingenuous, chummy Burger King commercials of recent (I'd love to tell them where they can stick that open fire of theirs), I still think that Ruffles advert with the pencil-drawn baby saying "r-r-r-ruffles have r-r-r-ridges" with the parents going "oh, that's so cute" has got to be the most irritating thing on tv right now.

Nobody in their right mind would feed their baby junk food.

A baby would not talk so incoherently; indeed, it wouldn't talk at all.

And who bloody cares about ridges? Is that such a major selling point?

A long-forgotton ABC special from 8 months ago about the delightfulness of junk food and corporate America's intent to dominate the world (but in a patronizing, supportive manner of course) reminded us of one potent fact: A Chinese communist woman in appearingly good physical shape told the journalist in front of the camera that a 8 pound bag of potatoes costs $1.89. Powerful stuff, yet Americans continue to buy Ruffles and Frito Lay and all the rest without a second (or perhaps even a first) thought.

(Now how much does a 1 pound bag of Ruffles cost: $3.89, you say?) That Chinese woman would make a far more intersting political commentator than any American "news"caster right now.

Hmmm, how many more not-so-poignant messages can I fit in here? I've spit on capitalism (as usual), pointed out that healthy people charmingly denounce America's junk food (and in front of our very eyes and in a way that most Americans won't "get"), pointed out how commercials are insulting to one's intelligence...

1. I hate the one for Price-Waterhouse
or some financial advisors. Anyway, Joe Suit throws a piece of paper at the trash and it bounces off the rim, so he dives on the floor to catch it and put it in. Then some lame ass says something about "they go all the way in all they do" or some such tripe.

I just think the whole thing is so insulting to the intelligence I can't imagine wanting to give them any business. Not that I have the cash for them to bother with me anyway.

With the little brat using his crayons to color on all the wood furniture in the house as the voiceover says, "Mark makes marks..." Mark is followed by a Stepford Moomie looking even more Xanaxed than Laura Bush, carrying a rag and a can of Pledge. Maybe if, instead of Pledge, mom opened up a can of (metaphoric) whup-a** on Mark, he wouldn't make the marks.:eyes:

my daughter saw that commercial she said, "What is she doing!? Why doesn't she make him clean that up himself? Give the kid some paper! Or a bucket of chalk and send him outside! Geez..." After that it just devolved into incoherent angry, disgusted sounds.

Which remains to this day the only place I've ever seen the Ditech.com ads you speak of above.

You can tell what type of audience that channel markets to just by the quality of the ads that do appear on anything other than their financial programs.

As for the Ditech.com guy, shouldn't he have been fired from his loan officer job by now? Damn, if I was that imcompetent I'd be living at home with mom/dad (which, based on one of the spots it appears he does.)

31. where would I start?
About the only kind of advertising I like is soft-sell with comedy/entertainment thrown in.

Any kind of ad that tries to prey on insecurities, or equate status with a product is on my black list.

An especially egregious offense against good taste would have to be the earlier Bowflex ads. Now, they have recently changed them to "everyday people", which was probably a good move - since by now everyone with a functioning brain knows that 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week will not, under any circumstance in the world including steroid use, get you the the kind of body the models had.

In fact, if you don't have the "genetics", you could work out on a Bowflex or any other machine 24/7 for decades and never look remotely like that.

So I consider that just plain false adversising. Selling dreams that unfortunately the average American is uninformed enough to buy.

54. Christian rock CDs...
Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 07:38 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
Over on BBC America I am assaulted by these nasty commercials for Christian rock from bands I have never heard of. Everyone in the audience is young, white, beautiful, squeaky-clean, and orgasmic over what they are hearing. Lots of closed eyes with palms raised in the air.

I literally will hit the mute or turn the channel when one comes on.

I also hate commercials that makes meanness or wrongdoing funny and/or acceptable. The "Ice Cream Man" commercial is one that fits the mean spirited category, and the folks having a fun Friday night trashing a laundry mat for a booze ad fits the latter.

There was also an ad showing two young men engaging in some contest heating burritos in microwave ovens. The person whose burrito heated first won whatever the product being advertised was (can't even remember, it was that "good"). Fella A's was the winner and asked to get the prize since he'd "won" -- fella B walks over to him, dumps fella A's burrito on the floor, and takes the prize for himself. Fella A is projected to be a wimp/dork, while fella B is the "cool" one.

Nice message. Actually, on reflection, it's very Republican in natural -- even if you win something fair and square I'm gonna steal it from you!

For some reason they are those a LOT on Cartoon Network during the overnight hours (I'm a night owl who doesn't go to bed till 4 AM), and even if I wasn't already a non-fan of religion that commerical would seal the deal for me.

I mean I guess they do those crowd shots to show that there's an arena full of people and that Christian music isn't just a fringe thing, but the sea of blank faces with upraised hands just gives me the willies.

is a direct pitch to the Baby Boom generation. That commercial is a restyling of the original Ruffles baby campaign from back in the early 60s when Ruffles were the first chip to HAVE "ruffles". It was their way to stand out from the chip crowd.

When I saw the new version I was immediately thrown back in time 37 years and remembered how I would walk around the living room trilling "Ruffles have ridges". :)

I still eat Ruffles to this day. I was "branded" early.
