What's better, DirectTV or DISH Network?
Yeah, yeah, I'm going to get cable. And, I'm reading about all these basic packages and whatnot -- and having to pay more for local channels -- on and on. So, for those of you know, what would you recommend? Thanks, in advance, for any & all help.

1. Dish has Free Speech TV
I have had Dish for a number of years and I've always been very satisfied with their service. But they do have more left-wing programming: WorldLink TV, FreeSpeech TV, UCTV... All of them have good lefty programs that you will enjoy. I believe DirectTV has WorldLink but not FreeSpeech. You can also get a deal on Dish through FreeSpeech TV (http://freespeech.org -- I think but do a google search.) It may not be much more of a deal than what you can get from them directly but it helps support Free Speech TV.

And, finally, don't forget that Rupert Murdoch is trying to buying DirecTV.

2. I'm looking at DISH Network
Selling points:
- Not owned by Rupert Murdoch
- either the 50+ or 100 channel package. I don't need HBO or Cinemax. I think their pricing structure is better.
- Free Speech TV

You don't have to pay for local channels, you can keep your antenna for that.

5. About the local channels?
I was looking at DISH Network's site on that, and it said that it charged $5.99 per month. So, are you saying you can nix that and just pop out your antenna whenever you want to watch your local channels?

You can do that. I went to the local electronic dept and bought a (splitter?) specially made for satellite use. On one side it has inputs for both sattelite and antenna on the other side the is an output to the TV so all you have do is change channels.

15. World Link on DirecTV is great...
It pisses me off that Murdoch bought Hughes out though...

6. I have Dish
The subcontractor who installed my system works for both Dish and DirecTV. They recommended Dish over DirecTV.

8. I like my Dish system...
So much happier with it than I ever was with cable. I pay the extra for local channels so I don't have to switch between the dish and the antenna. Also note that local channels are not available in every city -- I guess they're rolling that feature out slowly across the country.

By the way, Where can I find Freespeech TV on my system? I've never seen it.

9. We had Direct TV, switched to Dish.
Of course our Direct receiver was older, but the Dish is better in my opinion. I like the remote very much. In fact we ordered another one for $30, and it shipped in two days. It is better to have two.

We switched because Rupert Murdoch is buying out portions from Hughes.

10. Dish
For reasons I can't go into - I know the owners - and let's just say, supporting Dish is a far better choice for us.

13. Dish Also Has Real Porn (Yawn)
I don't have Dish Network, unfortunately. (I'd like to get BBC America, but just one channel hardly seems worth such a big expense. Just rabbit ears for me.) However, I did some sleuthing and discovered that Dish Network has yet another exclusive: uncensored porn. (No, not only the Fox News Channel! :-)) TENXtsy is carried on Dish Channel 496. Here's a handy little chart to tell you what you'll see.

Too bad they left a few things off the list. :-)
