Fun with babel fish
See what nice phrases you can come up with. Anyone who actually knows the language can tell us if it has worked.

I'll start

Je vomis la merde de chien

5. I know what you typed - that's why I went backwards -
It's off on some cumbersome syntax-sorta-things, but it's a good translator.

7. Yea but you don't really say "Dog Shit" in French...
I'm a first year student, but the language seems to work the way it was transleted.

You don't say "Brian's house", you say "the house of Brian."

8. that's my point - it more-or-less translates words, not phrases
So sometimes the syntax-whatever is off.

9. What I think it is doing....
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 12:19 AM by FDRrocks
Well, in French "dog shit" wouldn't really be correct grammer. But in English, both "dog shit" and "shit of the dog" would work. I think applies a strict translation when it goes into French, and then applies the literal translation when it goes back to English.

That would at least make sense, I'm sure they have been and are constantly tweaking the translation software.

12. Haha
Then that's just idiotic.... a language "translator" that can't conjugate verbs.

The court of my mind sides with you. Case closed. :)

14. well, thanks, but babelfish is okay - just stuck on words, not phrases
or groups of words. Maybe it's the spaces between or something.

15. It's okay for now...
It seems to me that if companies like Alta-Vista would invest time and money... we would have spot on translations by now, with unrecognized slang accurately quoted.

We have the technology, we can conjugate the verbs and rid ourselves of the prepositional tyranny!
