The Wrath of Steinbrenner
We know that he's going to try his same solution this off-season--buying a pennant.

But, the real question is: Who is going to pay the price on this Yankee team?

Do you think he'll fire Torre?

The problem is that he can't trade any of his overpaid divas like A-Rod.

1. Cashman. And he'll go after Stottlemeyer in an end run at Torre.

2. If the Yankees bought the pennant

What do you call what Boston did?

Nurturing a team full of homegrown talent?

It's the era of free agency.

Deal with it.

3. Actually, the Yankees didn't buy a pennant. They tried, but lost.

The Red Sox play as a team. The Yankees don't.

Has Steinbrenner made one good major free agent signing or trade other than Mussina?

7. Hmmm
Sheffield had a decent year, MVP quality.

Matsui is possibly the most underrated Yankee (if possible). He's turned out legit, to say the least.

A-Rod, excluding his dumbass move in Game 6, has identical numbers this season to Carlos Beltran, and Beltran is gonna be really rich really soon. Hell, Carlos will probably don the pinstripes.

REGULAR SEASON
A-Rod had a .286 average with 36 HR, 106 RBI and 28 SB in 155 games. He also had 112 runs scored and an .375 OBP
Carlos had a .267 average with 38 HR, 104 RBI and 42 SB in 159 games. He also had 121 runs scored and an .367 OBP
Carlos has light it up in the playoffs, but A-Rod had something like a .365 or so BA before Game 7.

There's three right there, not to mention the revitalization that was both Hernandez and Lieber.

Sorry about being so late with this, I didn't see the thread until a few minutes ago, and I had to dig up the numbers.

9. Beltran gets big hits when his team needs them.
A-Rod gets them during garbage time. I've seen about 100 games this year. I can remember A-Rod getting a big hit in about 4-5.

10. I'll grant you Matsui
if only on the basis of his performance the first three games of this series. But tell me, besides Jeter and Bernie Williams, what Yankke player batted over .200 in the final three, decisive games in this series?

5. George has to get over his obsession with winning now . . .
and start building a team of younger players who can win consistently a few years down the road . . . this shuffling players in and out and paying outrageous prices to older players well past their prime (e.g. Kevin Brown) is self-defeating . . . as is trading away virtually every promising prospect in your farm system . . . but I don't think Steinbrenner will change . . . he's set in his ways, even though they haven't brought New York a championship since 2000 . . .
