Protein bars and drinks SUCK
I've tried about 5 different protein drinks, and 5 or 6 different protein bars, and have decided they all suck.

I have to have one low in sugar, and it seems that the people who make these things can't find a way to cover up the taste of the protein without drowning the stuff in artificial sweetner.

GROSS!

1. I like Balance bars..

They're not too bad, especially the peanutbutter, chocolate, and mocha ones.

2. I like Detour bars
True, it's not exactly low carb, but it's got oodles of protein and tastes almost like a Snickers bar!

4. Me too. I buy the big
ones at the health food stores, 330 cals., and have one before my run. The peanut butter is to die for, and no trans fat.

3. I use the Herbal life protien powder
I mix it in the blender with another of their products along with a cup of fresh fruit (usually a small banana and 3 or 4 strawberries) 1 cup lowfat milk and 2 or 3 icecubes.

They're really pretty good for breakfast and lunch.

6. Designer Protein or Trader Joe's soy protein powder
Designer Protein powder is very good - it's whey protein though, so if you're a vegan or trying to stay away from dairy products, the soy protein powder is a pretty good second. Trader Joe's has a good soy protein powder.

I like the taste of the Designer Protein better - the soy protein is a little grainy - but they are both great protein supplements. Much better than those nasty bars. Zone bars are the only ones I can stand - but they're probably too high in sugar for what you're looking for.

7. Yes, yes they do
I just don't understand....Give me a plain peanut butter sandwich with a good multi-grain bread,--few more calories, but not but much if you do it right.

8. IMHO
I think they are considered a fringe market for masochists and are made and marketed up in price accordingly. This is probably considered a vice by the prepared food industry, one from which you can be weaned by later adding salt, sugar and chocolate as they did with granola bars.

Also they have to look different and be "conveniently" packaged so as not to flop against natural food sources or do it yourself mixes. Like frozen pizza versus the real thing.

Ironically, the laziness factor defeats the health nut and makes him pay more in the bargain. Sucker.
